The OLMA Overview -- March 8, 2019
|
|
While I like to think I know our campus and school facility inside out and backwards, I now have a new appreciation for this wonderful space that has become my home away from home.
This came courtesy of the public speaking class that I team teach with Mrs. Donovan. The girls were put into small groups and asked to create a themed tour of the school. I now know all about the best places to find a snack (and there are many!), the places where the most memories are made, places that are home to our school's most unique traditions, the quietest places to study, and more. The tours were well thought out, professionally presented and very entertaining. I cannot wait to give my next school tour!
Coming up next week is SpeakUp! This is a great event for students and parents. You will be amazed by the openness and honesty of the conversations. Please see the article below to sign up to participate. This event is planned jointly with St. Augustine Prep and will be held there on Tuesday evening.
Also next week is the OLMA National Honor Society (NHS) induction ceremony. Admission into the Mother Patricia Gaynor Chapter of the NHS is a huge honor. On Wednesday morning, the entire OLMA community will gather to celebrated our newest slate of NHS members beginning at 8:30 am in the Chapel. All are welcome to attend.
I wish you all a wonderful weekend and look forward to seeing you on campus soon. -- Mrs. Coyle
P.S. -- Please join me in a warm welcome to our four Spain Exchange students who arrived this week and will be on campus for another two weeks. They are wonderful!

Student Spotlight: Meet Cassidy Garcia
Class of 2022
|
|
While this young woman can be a little quiet and shy on the outside, don't let that fool you. OLMA freshman, Cassidy Garcia is fired up on the inside and determined to make a difference.
Cassidy attended Bishop Schad Elementary School and wanted a high school where she could continue to grow spiritually and academically. "From the minute I walked in the door I knew OLMA was where I wanted to be," said Cassidy. "I loved the Catholic school environment and everyone was extremely welcoming and friendly. Plus my brother was already at the Prep, so OLMA was a natural choice."
Cassidy immediately got involved in sports. She joined the Field Hockey Team in the fall and played basketball all winter. "Sports is my thing," she said. "In addition to playing sports at OLMA, I play basketball as part of a club team all year around. Playing sports is my favorite thing to do."
As busy as she is, Cassidy still finds time for service. As a member of the youth group at Christ the Good Shepherd Parish and the Cumberland County Sheriff Department's Police Explorers, service has become part of everyday life. "I like helping others as part of the youth group and the Explorers," said Cassidy. "I especially enjoy volunteering with the Sheriff's Office for events held at the Cumberland Mall and the Motor Sports Park."
Cassidy also likes being part of OLMA Interact and will be taking a leadership role in recruiting volunteers school wide to participate in the Shirley Mae Run and Michael J. Walk in support of curing breast cancer. "While walking or running is part of it, the day directly involves many of the breast cancer survivors," she said. "They are actually there and so thankful. I look forward to getting OLMA involved this year."
While it's too early to know for sure, Cassidy says that she is considering a career in law enforcement. Of course, she's also intrigued by the possibility of a career in the sports world. She's excited to get a taste of what that's all about this spring as part of the
Business of Sports and Entertainment
Mini-Mester course. Cassidy will get an inside look at careers in this field during a week filled with behind-the-scenes tours and discussions with industry professionals. She will have the opportunity to explore sports marketing tactics, product and pricing strategies, as well as visit Philadelphia area venues. There may even be time to take in a game or two.
In the meantime, Cassidy plans to continue focusing on her studies and enjoying life at OLMA. We think that's an excellent plan!

How often have you wished that you really knew what your child was thinking? Have you heard about teenagers struggling with stress, depression, anxiety, drugs and alcohol or suicidal thoughts and wondered what is going on and how can we protect our kids?
SpeakUp! is your chance. Come to our SpeakUp! on March 12, 2019 at 6:30pm at St. Augustine Prep. A team of students from OLMA and the Prep have worked together to plan an incredible evening.
The research is clear—the most protective factor for youth is a positive relationship with caring adults where open, honest conversations about tough topics lead to guidance and support. SpeakUp! is a proven, youth-driven, interactive program that brings youth, educators and parents together for real dialogue on the topics our students want to talk to us about. Students actually tell us what we can do to make it more likely they will talk honestly to us and listen.
Survey results show that as a result of SpeakUp!:
- 96% of participants feel less alone
- 93% are more willing to ask for help
- 91% have new strategies to manage challenges in their lives
There are no guarantees in life, but realizing you are not alone and being willing to ask for help is arguably the best insurance policy. We know all teenagers struggle with something at some point and no matter what the problem is, the solution always begins with speaking up and asking for help.
We can’t encourage you enough to make SpeakUp! a priority. Although you can come without your child and they can come without you, the data shows it’s even more effective if you can come together. Family members are never in the same breakout session.
If you have come before, come again. The conversation is always different and the results show the greatest impact for repeat participants!
If you think you don’t need it because you have a great relationship with your child, you should know many teenagers say it’s especially hard to admit their struggles to parents they’re closest to because they would hate to disappoint you.
We are proud to be a SpeakUp! school and we hope you can join us for this unique experience.

It's all natural, made from sunflower seeds, delicious, and safe for people with peanut allergies.
