Planning for Emergencies
We all hope for the best, but need to plan for any eventuality. Here's a handy guide to information and resources provided by the City of White Plains, Westchester County, and New York State to help you
in the event of an emergency.
White Plains ALERTS -- White Plains ALERTS is our community notification system. It primarily utilizes land line telephone numbers, however, we encourage you to register additional contacts to ensure that you receive important messages even if service to your land line is down. Learn more and sign up here .
BE PREPARED FOR WINTER STORMS -- Does everyone in your family have their own "Go-Bag" and does your household have its emergency preparedness kit at the ready? Read and print out a Preparedness Checklist now.
SAFE UP HIGH -- The City of White Plains Public Safety Department has produced an award winning DVD -- Residential and Commercial High-Rise Fire Safety and Evacuation DVD. Check it out, and other high rise safety tips, here.
SPECIAL NEEDS REGISTRY -- The Mayor's Advisory Committee for People with Disabilities has created an informational flier,  Be Prepared in the Event of an Emergency (English) and Este Preparado en caso de Emergencia (espanol) , to let residents with disabilities know about and encourage them to sign up for, the Westchester County Special Needs Registry. This helps White Plains police, fire, and other first responders better prepare for and respond to the needs of those with disabilities during emergencies.
WHAT IS HEAP? The New York State Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) helps low income people pay the cost of heating their homes. Find out if you are eligible and what the benefits are here.
THE WHITE PLAINS YELLOW DOT PROGRAM assists senior citizens and others during automobile accidents or other medical emergencies when they might not be able to communicate for themselves. Find out how to register here .
What's Going On Here?
The B. Altman department store opened its first suburban store in 1930 in this specially built two-story building on the Northwest corner of Mamaroneck Avenue and Post Road. Since then its been one of the busiest intersections in White Plains.

Now a fence is up and the demolition phase has started on Broadstone White Plains, a 434-unit (including 26 affordable) mixed-use project on a 2.1 acre site that extends from Post Road to Mitchell Place. Approved by the Common Council last year, the 440,000 sq. ft. project will include two 15-story residential buildings, one six-story structure, 460 parking places, retail space on Mamaroneck Avenue and an 8,000 sq. ft. public park on Mitchell Place.
