Outstanding Seniors Selected as District's Nominees for U.S. Presidential Scholars Program
|
|
Established in 1964, the United States Presidential Scholars Program was established for the purpose of recognizing and honoring our nation’s most distinguished graduating high school seniors. Each year, up to 161 American students receive this prestigious honor for their academic achievements, talents in the visual, creative or performing arts, or abilities and accomplishments in career and technical education (CTE) fields.
The Martin County School District’s selection committee received many outstanding recommendations this year, making the task of narrowing down nominees to just two exemplary students quite difficult. After careful deliberation, Gigi Copeland of Jensen Beach High School and Spencer Hackler of South Fork High School were selected to represent Martin County in this year’s competition. Both students excel inside and outside of the classroom, serving as leaders in their schools and in our community. Read more...

Martin County Students Create App to Help Schools with COVID-19 Contact Tracing, Monitoring Social Distancing
|
|
WPTV - Samuel Crombie is a Martin County High School graduate and current sophomore at Dartmouth College. His friend, Joseph Semrai, is a Martin County High School junior.
They created an app called "Passable" that features numerous tools for contact tracing, social distancing and overall safety in schools.
Before the coronavirus became a major concern, the two were already working on developing an app to be used in schools. It was inspired by an issue Semrai was hearing from one of his teachers.
"My teacher was just complaining about the hall pass system and how they have to take out a slip and write a physical hall pass every single time," Semrai recalled.
A simple issue, he and Crombie said, could be fixed by digitizing hall passes. They designed the app to allow a student to request a hall pass to a specific location in a school for a specific amount of time. A teacher can approve it quickly and digitally. Learn more via WPTV...

"Gimme" a Great Time "Fore" Education
|
|
Story contributed by Jackie Holfelder
|
|
What do you get when you mix a non-profit known for its upbeat events, two co-chairs who love to think outside the box and the need to do the “pandemic pivot” when it comes to fundraisers?
You get the Education Foundation of Martin County’s (EFMC) first-ever golf tournament, “Gimme” a Great Time ‘Fore” Education, set for November 6 at Hammock Creek in Palm City.
The glow-in-the-dark party on the greens will feature nine holes of excellent golf that will satisfy a curious beginner or seasoned linksman (or woman).
Registration for the socially-distanced nine-hole event and cocktails begin at 4:30 p.m. A shotgun start with a scramble format follows.
Co-chairs Arati Hammond, 1st Vice-President of the EFMC board of directors and Kate Cottner, 2nd Vice-President, have planned a first-rate event that will maintain social distancing and other precautions designed to keep everyone relaxed and comfortable.
Each player can choose between riding in his or her own cart, sharing a regular cart, or sharing a cart that has a plexiglass divider.
Beverage carts will roam the course and food stations will be placed between holes, offering golfers easy-to-eat, delicious fare as they play, minimizing interaction with anyone except their own foursome.
The features that make all golf tournaments enjoyable - longest drive and putting contests, closest-to-the hole, etc. - will all be included.
Even the awards ceremony will be unique: golfers will remain in their carts (each one will be parked at a cone that is already in place), listening to speakers on bullhorns give out results.
Details about the auction and raffles are still being worked out. FPL and AT&T are among the current sponsors.
The Arati Hammond Team at Keller Williams Realty is sponsoring the Hole-in-One contest, where golfers have a chance to win $10,000.
Tami Karol Insurance is underwriting the Signature Mar-TEE-ni Cocktail Reception.
“Gimme” a Great Time “Fore” Education will give you the chance to get out in the open air, enjoy camaraderie and a great event, and raise money to support the important programs that Education Foundation of Martin County provides in support of teachers.
The tournament is open to players age 21 and over. For information on sponsorship and registration, contact Lisa Rhodes at LRhodes@EducationFoundationMC.org or 772-600-8062.

Celebrating Outstanding Leaders
|
|
Each October, National Principals Month recognizes the essential role that principals play in making a school great.
Principals are among the hardest working, yet often least recognized individuals in education. Principals set the academic tone for their schools, and it is their vision, dedication, and determination that provide the mobilizing force for achieving student success.
Please join us in recognizing each of our #MCSDMagnificent school leaders by leaving your message of gratitude here!

Each early release day, J.D. Parker Elementary School classrooms transform into STEM labs! Last week, K, 1st and 2nd grade students were tasked with designing a shelter to protect the three little pigs from the big, bad wolf. In grades 3, 4 and 5, student engineers designed skyscrapers (some look just like rockets); after reading Iggy Peck Architect!
"Creativity and engagement filled our classrooms!" Principal Nicole Rathnaw shared.
