CITIZEN ARTIST VIJAY GUPTA INSPIRED HUNDREDS IN OC

Vijay Gupta (center) opened the 10th Annual Creative Edge Lecture by performing with student musicians from Pacific Symphony Youth Orchestra [Kevin Lu, violin - Grade 9, Portola High School (Irvine Unified) - PSYO, violin 1 section member; Jay Lee, viola - Grade 12, Northwood High School (Irvine Unified) - PSYO, viola section member; Priscilla Kim, cello - Grade 12, OC School of the Arts (Santa Ana Unified, Charter) - PSYO, principal cello.] with whom he had paid a visit to and performance at a local homeless shelter the day before. He then spoke about his work as a musician and his founding of Street Symphony, a nonprofit organization bringing music to Skid Row in Los Angeles. It was there that he met Ben Shirley (above), a musician who had fallen on hard times and substance abuse. Today, Shirley is a Composer in Residence at Street Symphony, helping Gupta to transform the lives of others. The audience of about 500 at the Irvine Barclay Theatre were thoroughly engaged and inspired by the performance, talk, and panel discussion that followed. The lecture is presented by ArtsOC, OC Department of Education and the 4th District PTA. The title sponsor of the lecture was The Boeing Company, with additional support from Phil & Mary Lyons, Haskell & White LLP, Judith Posnikoff, UCI Claire Trevor School of the Arts, Annenberg Foundation, Susan K. NEW PARTICIPANTS OFFER THEIR STORIES OF MILITARY LIFE IN FREE "VOICES" READING ON MARCH 28 AT HEROES HALL
The latest group of military veteran participants in Arts Orange County's VOICES: Veterans Storytelling Project will share their stories of life before, during and after military service on Thursday, March 28, 7 pm at Heroes Hall, OC Fair & Event Center in Costa Mesa. Admission is free. Dress warmly, as this is outdoors (in case of rain, it will move indoors). Some of the content is not suitable for young children. The participating veterans are:
Bill Cunningham, U.S. Coast Guard, Storekeeper Petty Officer, Second Class (E-5) Service: 1975-1982.
Tiffani K. Patterson: U.S. Coast Guard, Boatswain's Mate First Class (E-6) (E-6), 1995-2003.
Sean Mahoney: U.S. Air Force, Senior Airman [E-4], 1986-1990. Individual Ready Reserve: 1990-1996. [Sean's work will be read by an actor.]
Greg Nutt: U.S. Air Force, Senior Airman [E-4], 1984 - 1988.
The project coordinator and teaching artist is Dave Barton. VOICES is presented in collaboration with Heroes Hall at OC Fair & Event Center and the Tierney Center for Veterans Services of GoodwillOC. It is supported with funds from Orange County Community Foundation and The William Gillespie Foundation.
ARTSOC WELCOMES NEW OC ARTS LEADERS AT MIXER NEXT WEEK
Arts Orange County's annual Spring Mixer on Wednesday, March 13, 5-7 pm in the Monkey Business Cafe (next to ArtsOC offices) will welcome a cohort of more than 20 new arts leaders appointed over the past year and help introduce them to our arts community. The mixer is open to ArtsOC Members and "Not-Yet Members" free of charge. Three of these leaders were recently interviewed by Voice of OC about their plans. SEGERSTROM CENTER FOR THE ARTS

Terry Dwyer, who was appointed President of Segerstrom Center for the Arts in 2006, has left that position, it was announced by the Center on February 22nd. Paul Hodgins of Voice of OC covered the news about the departure in these articles about Dwyer and what's ahead for the Center.
IRVINE FINE ARTS CENTER APPOINTS NEW CURATOR
The Irvine Fine Arts Center has appointed VIRGINIA ARCE as its new curator (Exhibitions Program Coordinator). Arce has developed exhibitions in commercial, nonprofit, and experimental art spaces since 2011. She received her MFA in Critical Studies & Curatorial from UC Irvine and her BFA from Otis College of Art and Design. Between 2015-17, she served as the curatorial assistant for the Getty PST: LA/LA exhibition "Aztlan to Magulandia", the first major retrospective of Chicano artist Gilbert Magu Lujan. She recently developed programming for LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes, served as editor in chief for arts publication "Haunt Journal of Art", and is currently working on the launch of a new journal titled "The Invisible Archive" which focuses on performance and time-based practices in Southern California. She joins the IFAC team after having managed the Downtown Art Center Gallery in Downtown Los Angeles for over five years, a nonprofit gallery and project space that exhibits artworks by outsider and emerging artists.
