December 2018: Lightweight Machine Screen

By Jim Thompson

Apparently, the intellectual power behind paper machine design has decided that Machine Screens, that is the last screen before the paper machine, do not need to be as robust as designs in the past. We applaud this move. Talking to suppliers, the thinking goes that by the time the stock gets to this position, there has been plenty of opportunities to take out the large deleterious items that could damage the screen. At this point, it is only very fine material that should be removed.

We think this is a great idea. A more robust screen only leads to more sloppy operations, dependent on the crutch of an overdesigned screen to protect the delicate equipment downstream. Do the appropriate level of cleaning at the appropriate places, do the proper maintenance, and these new screens will work.

PS: We are looking for a new Executive Director for the Light Green Machine Institute. See the job posting here: www.onlypulpandpaperjobs.com
