Dairy assistance sees improvement in 2018
More than 21,400 dairy producers opted for coverage through the Margin Protection Program for Dairy (MPP-Dairy) in 2018, up by more than 2,000 producers from the previous year. This U.S. Department of Agriculture program was significantly updated in February by the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2018, and Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue said those changes attracted more producers to enroll in the safety net program or to increase their coverage.

New York's Byrne Dairy launches first phase of $125M plan
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo recently announced the groundbreaking of a $24 million expansion at Byrne Dairy's Ultra Dairy plant - the first phase of the company's $125 million plan to expand and create nearly 250 jobs in Onondaga County, N.Y.
According to the announcement, the initial phase will create 30 new jobs and includes a 42,000 sq. ft. expansion that will allow the plant to increase its packaging capability as well as add additional processing capacity and storage space. Over the course of three phases supported by a $15 million state investment, the company is planning several additional projects at its other production and warehouse facilities.

NASDA sets 2019 policy goals
Nationwide commissioners, secretaries and directors of agriculture have identified the National Association of State Department of Agriculture's top 2019 policy goals. Members will use a united voice through NASDA to make change in 2019.
NASDA's new areas of focus include animal biotechnology and workforce development. NASDA recognizes that labor supply is a concern throughout the agricultural supply chain. "NASDA is committed to advancing workforce needs through coalition building, interagency collaboration and programs that aid skills development," Barb Glenn, NASDA CEO, said.

Vets Plus acquires Merrick's Inc.
Vets Plus Inc., a Wisconsin-based manufacturer of animal health and nutrition products, recently announced that it has acquired Merrick's Inc., a maker of boluses, tablets, powders and electrolytes serving the production animal industry.
The new entity, known as Merrick's Animal Health LLC, acquired Merrick's assets effective Dec. 14, and will be a wholly-owned subsidiary of Vets Plus Inc., the company founded in 1990 by Rajiv Lall. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

2019 ADSA Annual Meeting Call for Abstracts
The abstract submission site for the 2019 ADSA Annual Meeting is now open! Visit https://www.adsa.org/Meetings/2019-Annual-Meeting/Abstracts to submit your abstract. Submission instructions, quality standards, answers to frequently asked questions, and student competition guidelines are available on the page. There is no abstract submission fee.
Again in 2019-Platform Sessions
. In a platform session, an invited speaker leads off a themed or topical oral session with a 30- or 45-minute talk, which is then followed by submitted abstract talks. This oral session type can result in higher levels of engagement of oral session submitters/presenters, while disseminating the most current research. Platform sessions provide a third oral session option, somewhere between a symposium and a general oral session. When submitting your abstract(s), be sure to look for platform sessions that may incorporate your research.
The deadline for abstract submission is February 20, 2019, at 11:59 pm (CST).
The 2019 ADSA Annual Meeting website is updated frequently with the latest meeting information, so bookmark the site and visit often. Meeting registration will be available in early February 2019.
Just a few reminders
: The 2019 ADSA Annual Meeting scientific program will feature 1,200 oral and poster presentations from around the globe. Make sure yours is included, as 1,800 scientists from 50 countries meet in Cincinnati. Benefit from symposia, workshops, and preconference events presented by the world's leading animal and dairy scientists. Topics include dairy food science, dairy production, animal health and well-being, animal and human nutrition, food safety, and production and management. As always, the success of the ADSA Annual Meeting begins with the quality of the science presented-we look forward to your contributions to this global gathering of animal and dairy scientists.

LDHM is now available by the Section
The Large Dairy Herd Management (3rd ed.) book can now be purchased by the section. The ADSA® Foundation made this change to allow purchase of portions of the book for dairy science classes and for professionals with a particular focus.
This peer-reviewed book was developed to help meet the growing information needs of dairy farmers, service professionals, and students worldwide.
