Oculus is an e-newsletter that is distributed by the OU Gibbs College of Architecture (GCA) during the fall and spring semesters. It features news about student, faculty, staff and alumni accomplishments, as well as events that may be of interest to our community. Note that there is a weekly version of the newsletter for a local audience, and a monthly version for a broader audience. Please share your news and events by noon each Friday to be considered for the following week's issue of Oculus.

GCA to Host "Invisible Eve" Exhibition Featuring Photos of Women Incarcerated in the State of Oklahoma by World-Renowned Photographer

Join us for the opening reception of the "Invisible Eve" photo exhibit by world-renowned photographer, Yousef Khanfar (www.yousefkhanfar.com), featuring women incarcerated in the state of Oklahoma, on March 12th from 5-7 pm in the Gould Hall Gallery. The exhibit will be on display from March 12th-19th. The reception will include a book signing with copies of the book available for purchase, and light refreshments will be served. This exhibition is hosted by the Women's and Gender Studies Center for Social Justice (CSJ), and co-sponsored by the Gibbs College of Architecture, the OU Department of Sociology, and the Knee Center for Strong Families.

GCA Students Participate in TEXO/ASC Region 5 Student Competition

The TEXO Foundation & Associated Schools of Construction (ASC), Region V Student Competition recently provided the opportunity for area universities to compete against each other. Construction Science Hosts "Women in Construction" Luncheon

Last week, the Haskell and Irene Lemon Division of Construction Science (CNS) hosted a luncheon for women in construction. Nearly 20 students and professionals met to network and discuss issues facing women in the industry.

Architecture Professor to Present at Construction Specification Institute's South Central Region Conference in Oklahoma City

On Thurs., April 4, associate professor of architecture Dave Boeck will present "Where are Design and Construction Industries Going? Collaboration is the future" during the Construction Specification Institute's 2019 South Central Region Conference in Oklahoma City. His talk will focus on a specific case study in Lusaka, Zambia. Boeck and John Harris, assistant professor of Regional and City Planning, took six students from the disciplines of Architecture, Regional + City Planning and Landscape Architecture to Lusaka, where they worked on different facility design projects with Family Legacy Ministries International, a Dallas-based ministry. He will share lessons learned through this collaborative experience.

Outside Opportunities
Columbian Filmmaker, Margarita Martinez, to Screen Documentary at the Union

"La NegociaciĆ³n," a documentary made by the Colombian filmmaker Margarita Martinez, will be shown in the Frontier Room of the Union at 6 pm on March 12. In the film, she documented the entire 4-year process that led to the peace agreement between the Columbian government and the FARC, the guerrilla group that operated in the country for more than 50 years. The film will be followed with a Q&A by Martinez. This event is offered by the Colombian Student Association, the Mewbourne College of Earth and Energy Energy Institute of the Americas, the David L. Boren College of International Studies' Center for the Americas, and the OU Department of Film and Media Studies.

Living with Water and Stone: Urban Adaptation Beyond Green Infrastructure

The Department of Geography and Environmental Sustainability is hosting a lecture by Dr. Ursula Lang from the Rhode Island School of Design as part of their Colloquium Series. The talk examines contemporary green redevelopment in Glasgow, Scotland-- one of the rainiest cities in Europe-- where global processes of deindustrialization and redevelopment shape housing politics, public health outcomes, and persistent impoverishment.

GCA Alumnus to Offer "Drawing on Location" Rendering Class through Norman Firehouse Art Center

Join OU GCA alumnus Fred Schmidt, FAIA, for a "drawing on location" rendering class, hosted by the Firehouse Art Center in Norman. Schmidt has made numerous contributions to the architecture profession in Oklahoma. He was recently honored with the AIA's Williams Wayne Caudill Award, as well as a Lifetime Achievement Award for distinguished leadership. He is a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects, and a past President of AIA Central Oklahoma Chapter.
