Welcome Back Social Work Familia!

I hope you enjoyed your break and hope you used this time to surround yourself with love. I personally used this break to reflect on my friendships and relationships with the people around me. Most importantly, I used this break to pause the world and appreciate my body, narrative and mind. During my break, I took the time to appreciate my body. My body is my temple and I have to take care of it because it takes care of me. I appreciated my narrative because if it wasn’t for my story, I would not remember my past or who I wish to become in my future. Lastly, I appreciated my mind because I allowed my thoughts to speak for me which enabled me to utilize my voice when I felt empty.

Appreciating your entire self is essential if we want to become successful and most importantly happy people. I am blessed to have used my break as a reflection tool so I can better understand my goals and aspirations. I am eager to finish my second semester of graduate school and I will become the first in my family to get a Masters Degree.

Celebrate Arab Heritage Month
Nationally, Arab Heritage Month is celebrated throughout the month of April. On campus, we begin our celebration on February 17 and conclude in mid-April. This year, many of the events focus on broadening the conversation about inclusion and exclusion, with the hopes of engaging in dialogue about the nuances of language, culture, and geography.

HBCU Partnerships

One priority of the School's DEI strategic plan is to increase the diversity of the student body. A recent initiative in the School's recruitment efforts has been to develop partnerships among Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU's).

U-M SSW alumna, Vanessa Jackson ('06), also a Tuskegee University graduate,
worked with the Office of Student Services and the DEI Office to begin a relationship with
with Tuskegee University, Alabama State University, and Alabama A&M University.

Students from these partnering HBCU's can be nominated by their BSW Program or Psychology Department and are encouraged to apply by early application deadlines.

After students meet admissions criteria, they are eligible for a subsidized visit to the U-M SSW, SSW grant/scholarship aid, and participation in a partnership mentoring program.

For more information on the HBCU partnerships, email ssw-dei-office@umich.edu
PRAXIS -
Meeting Notes

Learn more about what the Promoting Action for Intersectional Social Justice (PRAXIS) committee has been working on.

PRAXIS seeks to act for justice by articulating definitions of social justice in micro, mezzo and macro contexts, to develop/recommend goals for the SSW that are consistent with these definitions and to plan actions to move towards these goals. PRAXIS will further justice and prevent injustice by identifying and applying emerging knowledge related to relevant justice goals.

PRAXIS is comprised of students, faculty, and staff. Those who are not on the committee are still able to attend and have access to the details of the meetings.
