Volunteers Needed - Boards/Upcoming Events

1. Pennsylvania Family Support Alliance:   Our emphasis for April is Child Abuse Prevention Month. We are hoping that agencies will put blue lights in their entrance or in a window to join in building awareness. For more information, contact Ann Moffitt, Director of Development.

2.  United Way of York County - Allocations Panel: Put your passion into action: Volunteer on one of United Way of York County's Allocation Panels. Decide how United Way distributes funds raised annually from The Community Fund, covering issues from early childhood education to prevention and self-sufficiency programs.  Volunteers review applications for funded programs in Education, Health and Financial Stability.

The Allocations process begins in February 2019 with volunteer orientation and ends in late April. Volunteers will review applications online, meet to discuss applications, and go on agency visits to review programs in action and interact one on one with agency staff. An allocations volunteer can expect to attend five to seven meetings, which include orientation, panel meetings, and agency site visits. Here is more information!

3.  Big Brothers Big Sisters of York & Adams Counties:
We are looking for a business to partner with for our Beyond School Walls workplace mentoring program. Employees from the business would meet one-on-one at their place of work with high school students from York City schools twice a month for at least a year. Big Brothers Big Sisters' staff would coordinate meetings, provide content, and support each match as they develop a strong and enduring mentoring relationship. Interested businesses should contact Linda Gorter, Executive Director, at [email protected].

4.  York City Dollars for Scholars  is looking for volunteers to serve on its Board of Directors.  If you have a passion for encouraging York City students to pursue academic achievement and post-secondary educational opportunities, please contact Diane Baker at 717-747-1550 or at [email protected] for more information.

5. Children's Aid Society: We've been chosen as the beneficiary of this year's FestivICE, January 17 - 19, presented by York Traditions Bank! Enjoy shopping, dining, s'more roasting, and chillin' outdoor excitement. DiMartino Ice Company of Jeannette, Pennsylvania, carves through York for FestivICE on their never-ending quest to cut the coolest ice art all around the state.  Watch live as they work their trade and sculpt their custom designs.

York C.A.R.E.S. is a partner program sponsored by CAS. They are seeking volunteers to help with its mission to help York's homeless build stronger healthier lives. For more information on this program, contact Shari Gordon or call 717-845-5771.

6. York College of PA
"Reflecting on York's Race Revolts: Fifty years Ago"
Feb. 6, 2019, Waldner Performing Arts Center
Drawing on his recently published book, The Great Uprising: Race Riots in Urban America during the 1960s, history professor Dr. Peter B. Levy will examine the causes and consequences of York, Pennsylvania's 1969 race revolt.  Why did it take place? How did it compare to the other riots that swept across the nation during the 1960s? And how has it been remembered?

The Jazz Ambassadors from The United States Army Field Band
March 11, 2019, 7:30 p.m.,  Waldner Performing Arts Center
The Jazz Ambassadors is the United States Army's premier big band. This 19-member ensemble, formed in 1969, has received great acclaim both at home and abroad performing America's original art form, jazz. The band has appeared in all 50 states, Canada, Mexico, Japan, India, and throughout Europe. In 1995, the Jazz Ambassadors performed in England, Wales, Belgium, Luxembourg, and the Czech Republic in commemoration of the fiftieth anniversary of the end of World War II. The band has also been featured in unique joint concerts with major orchestras, including the Detroit and Baltimore symphonies.

7. YWCA York:
