The Lake Current - March 8, 2018
We hope you're coping with the aftermath of these two back-to-back nor'easters. With all of the power outages and other associated problems from the storms, here's an abbreviated newsletter just to give you an update on upcoming events.

Before we get to that, right up front you should know that all week long our building has been serving as an official Putnam County "Comfort Station," where people can get warm, charge their personal devices, have hot coffee, play cards or board games, and watch some TV. A dedicated crew of council officers and member volunteers have had our hall up and running every day since Saturday, and we've also been distributing bottled water and dry ice to people in need.

Folks, THIS IS WHAT WE DO as Knights of Columbus. We are not only there for each other, but we're there to help people in need, especially in our own community. Sincere thanks to all who have pitched in and sacrificed their time for others.
Lenten Fish Fry Fridays Continue Tomorrow!

We were forced to cancel last Friday's Fish Fry for the safety of our guests and our hard-working crew. We know we made the right decision, and we also know that people are looking for us to get back to work, so Fish Fry is ON for tomorrow from 5-8 p.m .! Bring the whole family for dinner!

For only $10 you get your choice of these sumptous fish dishes -- to eat-in or take out:

  • Our classic beer-batter Fish & Chips
  • Linguine with White Clam Sauce
  • Shrimp Scampi over Pasta
  • Cape Cod Clam Strips & Fries

You asked for a baked fish option, so this week's special is Flounder Piccata! Our chef's creation features wild-caught Alaskan flounder filets in a butter-lemon-white wine sauce and topped with capers, baked to perfection and served over rice pilaf with a vegetable medley and garlic aioli on the side. Still only $10! As with all of our specials, quantities are limited, so order early!

At our last night of Fish Fry, we broke all previous records, serving 180 meals from 5-8 p.m. That's A MEAL A MINUTE! Thanks for your support and patience . We're streamlining our operations even more to get our orders to you as quickly as possible. Just remember that everything is made on premises and to order so it is as fresh and tasty as it can be! We're told it's worth the wait, and who are we to argue?

As always, we're offering complimentary dessert, coffee and tea service, and soft drinks for the kids for all eat-in orders.

PROCEEDS TO BENEFIT CHARITY!

Weather permitting, our Fish Fry Fridays will be every remaining Friday during Lent -- March 9, 16 and 23, but not Good Friday (3/30).
St. Patrick's Day Parade & Celebration This Sunday; Marchers and Volunteers Needed

March with us in Mahopac this Sunday -- March 11th -- in the Northern Westchester/Putnam St. Patrick's Day Parade! All council members, Ladies Auxiliary members, and friends are welcome to march behind our banner. Bring the whole family!

This year's Grand Marshal is Putnam County Executive MaryEllen Odell.

Meet at the council by noon to carpool over to the parade shuttle area. The road will close at 1:00 p.m., and the Pledge of Allegiance will be said at the Mahopac firehouse at 1:30 p.m. The parade steps off at 2 p.m.

Don't forget that Daylight Saving Time begins on Sunday , so "spring forward" and move your clock up an hour on Saturday night before going to bed!

We are proud to once again be a prime sponsor of this parade, which is the third largest in New York State and is in its   42nd consecutive year. This parade is meant to recognize and celebrate Irish culture, heritage and pride, for those who have emigrated here from the Emerald Isle, the Irish-American community, as well as those who are Irish in spirit! There will be numerous organizations, bands, clubs, patriotic groups, Irish dancers, and a vast array of participants showing their support of the Irish community.

After the parade, join us for a taste of Ireland's finest back at our Council Hall, with live performances by the Kelly Oster School of Irish Dance, singer/musician Ed Mullaney, and the Stephen P. Driscoll FOP Lodge Memorial Pipe Band. Enjoy a plate with a corned beef sandwich, potatoes, cabbage, and Irish soda bread for only $5 . We'll also be serving Guinness Stout on tap, in addition to our usual lounge selections. Free admission!

IMPORTANT NOTE: This is going to be another HUGE council event, and we need your help setting up, serving the crowds, and cleaning up after the reception. Please consider pitching in and helping, even for just a little while to take the burden off the rest of the crew. Contact event chairman Anthony Falco for info on how you can help, or just show up Sunday and say, " How can I help? "
Putnam County Veterans' Service Medal Fundraiser Breakfast - This Saturday 9-11 a.m.

Putnam County is planning to recognize the service of our military veterans with a special award, similar to the service medal presented in 1919 to World War I service members (pictured here).

The Putnam County Veterans’ Service Medal Advisory Panel is raising funds for the medals from private sources. Their first effort is a Pancake Breakfast fundraiser on Saturday, March 10th, from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Carmel VFW (32 Gleneida Avenue). Tickets are $15 and sponsorships are available.

Please support this worthwhile endeavor to recognize Putnam's military service veterans! (Flyer with details below).
Membership Meeting - Wednesday, March 14th at 7:30 p.m.

Our monthly general business meeting will be this coming Wednesday , with dinner served at 6:30 p.m., and the meeting beginning promptly at 7:30 p.m.

All members are welcome (and encouraged!) to attend our monthly membership meetings. Nothing happens at our council without the input and support from our members. Our meetings are the best way to have your voice heard and get involved with our many fun charitable and family activities.
Bingo Fundraiser to Benefit Rosary Hill Home - Sunday, March 25th

Our Ladies Auxiliary will be hosting another fun day of bingo gaming on Sunday, March 25th, at our council hall. Proceeds from this event will go to benefit Rosary Hill Home in Hawthorne.

Rosary Hill Home has been owned and operated by the Dominican Sisters of Hawthorne since 1901. They are committed to providing loving, one-on-one palliative care to those suffering from terminal cancer. The Sisters and staff strive to meet the physical, emotional, spiritual, and recreational needs of the patients.

The Home is free to all who meet the Admission requirements; there is no discrimination on the basis of race, creed, color, national origin, sex, or handicap. In fidelity to their rule of life, the Sisters depend solely upon the "providence of God and the hourly mercy of the charitable public." No payment is accepted from patients, their families, private insurance, or from the government!

Our doors will open for bingo at 1 p.m. and games begin at 2 p.m. Cost is only $30 and the cash prizes will be substantial (as always)! Contact Gail Silke for more information and to make your reservation. This will probably sell-out, so save your place today!

  • Due to weather cancellations, our monthly council officers meeting will be held tonight at 7 p.m. Our monthly Corporation Board meeting will follow immediately after.

  • The two latest storms have proven the value of social media in emergency situations. Critical information on weather, road closures, shelters, comfort stations, storm damage, dry ice and water distribution, and power restoration (such as it was) were all available in more or less up-to-the minute fashion on social media such as Facebook and Twitter. We can't always update our website or send out emails to hundreds of members and friends on short notice, but we do send out timely updates via Facebook and Twitter regularly. If you're not using social media, you should be, if for no other reason than to receive important information in times of emergency. The links to our Facebook page and Twitter feed may be found below. Follow us!

Remember, a full calendar of events can always be found on our website: carmelknights.org under the Upcoming Events tab, and check out our Breaking News page . And don't forget to "like" our Facebook page for up-to-the minute announcements, photos, event listings, and items of interest.
