Parents-Guardians, please return permission slips by April 12, 2019
The Wisconsin Seal-a-Smile offering free dental services to ICS students has been rescheduled for Monday, April 22, 2019 . Please be sure to get your child’s permission slip in to reserve their spot for this program.

In the US, children miss about 52 million hours of school each year because of dental problems. Poor oral health, untreated oral diseases and dental conditions can largely affect a child’s ability to learn. 90% of decay in children’s permanent teeth occurs on the chewing surfaces of the back teeth, sealants serve as a physical barrier to the bacteria that cause decay.

This is why Indian Community School is offering a preventative dental sealant program for all students 1st through 8th grade. Please know that a
Dentist (DDS) and a dental hygienist (RDH) will be at our school to provide this program to students.

Below are Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ’s) we think will help you understand these services.

What exactly does this program offer for my child?
• Dental sealants.
• Fluoride varnish.
• Tooth brushing instructions and oral health education.
• Free toothbrush and toothpaste.
• A letter sent home explaining what services were done and suggestions for further treatment.

What is a sealant?
• A sealant is a thin, tooth colored; plastic coating that is painted on a tooth to help prevent cavities from forming.
• Your child will be checked to determine which teeth can have sealants; sealants will be done that same day.

What if my child already has sealants?
• Our Dentist will check your child’s sealants, and replace or repair those that may no longer be there.

What is fluoride varnish?
• Fluoride varnish is topical gel that is painted onto the teeth, making them stronger.

Please download, print out and complete the attached permission slip and return to the front desk no later than Friday, April 12, 2019 . We ask that you complete the form, even if you do not want your child to participate in these services.

Six Little Words Say A Lot...

JoAnn Ash, Language Arts teacher here at ICS, recently introduced a memoir project to our students. She wanted students to approach the task of writing their memoirs in a very fun and readable way. Thus, student perspectives on life in only six words.

“It's a good way start the unit and get the students thinking about what a memoir is,” said Ms. Ash. She also invited staff to submit six-word memoirs for the memoir wall outside of her classroom.

8th grade student Arianna F. had this to say about the project:

“While writing six word memoirs, I learned that thinking deeply really helps you channel your creativity. Six word memoirs are awesome; I encourage anyone and everyone to try them! It really helps you relax, too.

When I read other students' memoirs, I realized and acknowledged the fact that everyone is, indeed, different for many reasons. I also realized that other people's pasts do affect them.

I feel as if we should study memoirs because we get a bit more insight into other people's lives. We also get to develop these skills for ourselves and we truly see what emotions and what experiences affect us the most. For me, I feel as if this experience grew my creativity, as well as my writing skills.

Arriana’s final words of advice: “... for anyone struggling with memoir-writing, dig deep within yourself.”
