Celebrate Independent Bookstore Day
by Catherine Weller
Independent Bookstore Day
To walk into an indie bookstore is to walk into a world of discovery. The fruits of the products of humanity can be plucked from its shelves. Each store is different; each its own world. The books, diversity of thoughts and ideas, readings, events, and knowledge that indie bookstores bring to their communities are well worth celebrating. That's why independent bookstores across the nation will host celebrations of the wild, woolly, and wonderful institution that is the indie bookstore on  Saturday, April 28th.

Weller Book Works will be one of the more than 450 stores participating in Independent Bookstore Day. Tony will offer his popular stencil station - bring an item and he'll stencil it for free - from 10:30 am - 3:30 pm. We'll have cool book-related merchandise that can be purchased only on that day, and only from indie bookstores. I'm referring to a canvas utility pouch with a quote from Colson Whitehead, and a print from the cookbook, Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat signed by the author and illustrator. There's also an as yet undisclosed item commemorating the 20th anniversary of Harry Potter and Oxford University Press's Feminism: A Very Short Introduction, both available for free.

Weller Book Works will also join our indie bookstore colleagues along the Wasatch Front for the second year's offering of the Utah Independent Bookstore Day Passport. Visit Booked on 25th in Ogden, Printed Garden in Sandy, The King's English on 15th East in Salt Lake City, and Weller Book Works at Trolley Square on Independent Bookstore Day and get your passport stamped at all four places. Leave your passport at the last store you visit to be entered to win a $30 gift certificate from the store you visited last. Passports will be available to print soon. To find them, check the website or Facebook page of the store of your choice.

It's going to be a lot of fun. And it wouldn't be the same without you. Join us.

Rare Book Selection  by Tony Weller
How sad the impulse toward deception that so weakens trust between persons. But persons have tricked each, probably since long before the earliest stories.

My only gambling involves books, but the gilt embossed dice on the cover of The Destruction of Mephisto's Greatest Web give me homey feelings, for very different reasons than the ones for which author H. K. James, who was J. H. Keate, wrote this book.

The Destruction of Mephisto's Greatest Web is written to protect persons from crooked methods used to deceive. Most of his work is on gambling crimes, but his 300 page book also exposes trick devises, confidence games, loan sharks, clairvoyants, slot machines, counterfeiting, horse races and gold scams.

The book was published here in Salt Lake City in 1914. It bears testimonial letters from The Latter-Day Saints' High School, Salt Lake Public Schools, The First Congregational Church, Salt Lake City corp., and Phillips Congregation Church. Copies are moderately scarce but this one is inscribed in green ink by J. H. Keate to a friend.  $275

Tony Weller has a refined reading sensibility after working in the Weller family's store since the age of 10 and is a Used Book Buyer, Appraiser, and Head of the Rare Book Department. Join him for smart book talk and light refreshments every last Friday of the month for the Collectors' Book Salon, hosted upstairs in the Rare Book Department from 6:30 - 9:00 pm.
