TABC Alumni Represent
|
In light of the special JLIC program this past Wednesday evening, Dr. Katz reminded Rabbi Jachter that of the 22 JLIC rabbis serving on campuses across North America, three are TABC graduates - Rabbi Aryeh Kaplan '97 at UCLA, Rabbi Noam Friedman '06 at Columbia University and Rabbi Benny Berlin '08 at Queens College. Rabbi Jachter noted that Rabbis Kaplan, Friedman and Berlin are in regular contact with him for Halachic consultations. Dr. Katz commented that he does not think there is another yeshiva high school that can make such a similar point of pride, claiming such a significant portion of rabbis who serve in this vitally important role.

TABC Holds Successful
Emergency Blood Drive
|
By Matan Rockowitz
Thursday morning, December 21st, TABC was buzzing with excitement with what was the most hyped up event in my 3 years there. The world famous TABC Community Blood Drive took place in our brand new Storm Café. I loved seeing parents, students, teachers, and administrators come together for a great cause and, even better, we donated an amazing 57 pints of blood! Not only were people giving blood throughout the day but for the better half of the day the amazing organization Gift of Life came to register those 17 and over for the bone marrow registry with the possibility of saving someone's life. Over 80 seniors and juniors registered. I would like to thank NJ Blood Services, The Gift of Life, Nurses Nancy Bleiberg and Linda Moed Cohen, and my fellow Blood Drive committee members Avi Stuart, Avi Gold, Max Krantz, Daniel Deschino, and Netzach Schuman.
We would also like to thank the following stores for donating food for the blood drive staff and student volunteers: Poppy's, Sammy's, Dunkiin Donuts, Chopstix, Chickies, and EJ's Pizza.
Thank you to all who helped make this blood drive one of the best we have had in recent years! We hope to have another blood drive in the spring. For more photos, click here.

December 25th Learning
Unites Parents & Sons
in Torah Learning
|
We were thrilled to have so many parents visiting us in school for our parent-son learning programs. The freshman and sophomore parents had the opportunity to learn with their sons and then sit in on their sons' shiurim. The junior and senior parents had the opportunity to hear a wonderful shiur by Rav Judah Mischel all together in the Beit Knesset. Rav Mischel's shiur was dedicated l'zecher nishmat Jerry Pasternak z"l, גדליה בן מנחם יהושע ז"ל. For more photos, click

Jewish Life on Campus:
An Informed Choice
is the Best Choice
|
This past Wednesday night, TABC and Ma'ayanot hosted their annual Jewish Life on Campus program. The evening featured over 27 college students from such varied universities as Cornell, SUNY at Binghamton, Cooper Union, New York University, Columbia, University of Pennsylvania, Drexel, Princeton, Brandeis, Yale, Johns Hopkins, University of Maryland, Rutgers, Queens, UMass at Amherst, and, of course, Yeshiva University. The participants were privileged to hear not only from them in round-robin sessions from which parents and students could choose, but from the Director of Professional Recruitment and Leadership Development for OU-JLIC (Orthodox Union-Jewish Learning Initiative on Campus), Rabbi Gideon Black, who clearly and persuasively explained the "what, why and how" of JLIC's mission. Most of the carefully selected universities who were invited have JLIC rabbi/educators on their campuses. They are sent from the OU and work in partnership with Hillel, to help college students navigate the college environment and balance their Jewish commitments with their desire to engage in the secular world.
The evening was also enriched by the presence of many TABC and Ma'ayanot alumni, representing a full range of prestigious colleges. They spoke animatedly about the shiurim, minyanim and other Jewish-related activities that they make it their business to seek out and participate in, no matter which college they attend. Anyone watching these intelligent and exemplary Jewish youth speak so eloquently about the Jewish life they have chosen to either participate in or fundamentally create within the colleges of their choice would have been proud. It was a gratifying and humbling sight.
The program was jointly organized by the College Guidance Departments of TABC and Ma'ayanot, led by Dr. Garry Katz and Ms. Leebie Mallin.

"Torah U'madda":
Psychology in the Parsha
|
Rabbi Dr. Schnall's Psychology classes have been studying the Bystander Effect, learning why witnesses to emergencies unfortunately and very surprisingly may not intervene when help is needed - and applying this knowledge to Parshat Shemot. Ask your son to explain Moshe Rabbeinu's interaction with the Egyptian who was hitting the Jew, in light of the Theory of Bystander Intervention.
|
On Thursday, everyone gathered in the Beit Knesset for Mincha, after which they boys realized they were in for a real treat. Almost immediately, the chants of "Book Day!" to TABC's favorite chanting tune began. From there, the boys' enthusiasm only grew as they watched a video showing how a small walking toy can be made with things you can find around the house. Dr. Carol Master then introduced the book, "Spare Parts: Four Undocumented Teenagers, One Ugly Robot, and the Battle for the American Dream", which all faculty and staff will be reading. We will then dedicate a day on March 20, 2019 to study different aspects of the book and expand our horizons.
