Youth Mental Health First Aid

Learn how to best provide the support your students need!
  • 1 in 5 teens live with a mental health condition.
  • 50% of Students age 14 and older with a mental illness drop out of school
  • Suicide is the third leading cause of death for youth ages 10-24
  • Teachers, coaches, and school personnel may be the first line of defense.  

Youth Mental Health First Aid is an 8-hour public education program which introduces participants to the unique risk factors and warning signs of mental health problems in adolescents, builds understanding of the importance of early intervention, and teaches individuals how to help an adolescent in crisis or experiencing a mental health challenge. Mental Health First Aid uses role-playing and simulations to demonstrate how to assess a mental health crisis; select interventions and provide initial help; and connect young people to professional, peer, social, and self-help care.

The course covers: 

  • Common signs and symptoms of mental illness including anxiety, depression, eating disorders, and ADHD
  • Common signs and symptoms of substance use
  • How to interact with an adolescent in crisis
  • How to connect the adolescent with help.

Must be present for the full class to complete certification.
