Message from
Head of School Lisa Lalama

WMS is a non-profit organization governed by a board of directors. Our board members include current and alumni parents who volunteer their time to work on behalf of WMS today and in the future. Their job is to look well ahead and determine how to best position the school to sustain itself while focusing on the school's mission and goals, along with the strategy to meet those goals.

Each year we invite the WMS Board of Directors and others who have supported our school as members of our advisory board to spend the morning visiting WMS. Next Wednesday, our board members will see our classrooms in operation and enjoy a glimpse into daily life at WMS. This day gives them great satisfaction, as they see firsthand how their work connects to the daily operation of WMS. You might think our board members know everything that happens each day in our school. However, that is not their job. They entrust that work to the dedicated WMS staff. In 1964,  the WMS Board of Directors, staff and community founded our school, and today, we continue to work together to ensure it remains dedicated to the same Montessori principles. With the board's oversight, the daily work of our staff, and ongoing support from parents and our community, we are WMS!

Lower Elementary Students Travel Through the Green Screen Time Machine

Lower Elementary students are traveling back in time. Way, way, way back to the time of the Big Bang.

Drawing inspiration from a video project second-grader Oliver Poland created based on the book "The Time Machine" by H.G. Wells, the 6-9 students are using green screen technology to tell the stories of the  Great Lessons as adventures in time travel. As they imagined what it would be like to live through the Big Bang and the ages of dinosaurs and early humans, their stories took on lives of their own.

Students used TouchCast on iPads to record their Great Lesson time machine videos, and found images on the web to insert as green screen backdrops.  Along the way, they also honed their creative skills. Lead 6-9 teachers Melissa Connelly and Carol Lettich coached students in acting - working on facial and vocal expression - and script writing for their video projects.

The students have been putting the finishing touches on their videos this week and screened them for their classmates in the Great Room today. View one group's finished product below.
