Please Be advised that St. Sarkis Church Saturday School Christmas Hantes

St. Sarkis Wall of Fame

The Feast of St. Stephen

The Feast of St. Stephen, the first deacon and proto-martyr was celebrated on Sunday, December 23th, 2018 at St. Sarkis Church. In his Sermon, Dr. Nareg Spoke about the meaning of the service one of the core missions of the diaconate. He also commended the selfless effort of all church as services including deacons, altar services, choir members and organ players. Following church services the deacons serving the altar wore crowns in honor of this special day and offered incense to the holy altar and received the blessings of Fr. Nareg Terterian.
Saint Sarkis Basketball Christmas Party - A joyful celebration
Reported by Edward Barsamian

Most of us try to live our lives by applying, as possible, ancient words of wisdom such as "Live 1 day at a time" and "don't leave for tomorrow want you can do today".

So when the 2018-2019 first half of the Armenian Churches Sports Association basketball season ended with wins for all our teams, and Girls and junior Boys in 1 st and 2 nd place respectively, we did not want to think too far ahead, but celebrate the moment instead.  And what better way to celebrate than having a terrific Christmas party.
A newly formed sisterhood of the Junior Boys team parents, now fondly adopting the name of "SARKETTES"
Must have broken texting records in organizing all facets of the party in record time.

The Christmas party took place on Saturday, December 22, and a large crowd made up of Saint Sarkis players, parents, grandparents, and friends of the teams brought their designated items: food, drinks, desert, Santa gifts
A rich buffet of home made dishes were supplanted by 10 pies of hot pizza donated by Juniors coach Arry Nalbandian just in time for the blessing of the food by Deacon Michael Gostanian.

Immediately after the meal, the coaches were introduced and presented with gift certificates as a token of appreciation for their efforts for the players. Junior Boys coach, Arry Nalbandian and Jeff Varadi and Girls' coach Emma Biramian expressed their satisfaction coaching our youth, and urged all players to do their best not only on the basketball court, but in their life.
"Be active, be involved, treasure the friendships you make playing basketball and I am confident you will grow up to be terrific  adults in the future" said coach Arry.

Mr. Greg Dosstur gracefully accepted to DJ the evening and assisted by Hovsep Terterian, did a great job to keep the dance floor busy through the evening. A mini dance-moves exhibition started with Brandon Nalbandian putting on some amazing break-dance moves , and then many others joined in to show their (slightly less impressive stuff), but everyone was cheering and urging the dancers on. DJ Greg has great music for everyone: Armenian soorch bar, line dance music for the younger players, and everything in between., and as a further surprise he introduced a young rap singer Tonee Marino, who entertained all with 3 of his new hit songs.
St. Mary's Hospital visit by Salt and Light Youth Group
Reported by Mrs. Liza Kabarajian

On Saturday December 22 nd a group of volunteer teenagers from the St. Sarkis Church visited St. Mary's Children's Hospital in Bayside Queens.  These volunteers are all members of the church's Salt and Light Youth Group, which has been formed to promote fellowship and Christian education for our youth.

Since 1870 St. Mary's Children Hospital has been treating children with complex medical conditions.  The facility is New York's largest and most experience provider of long term care for children with medically complex conditions and the only post-acute care for children in the area.

The Salt and Light Youth Group spent the morning in this Christmas season giving gifts and interacted with the young patients.  They helped make ornaments, shared a few laughs, and spread some Christmas joy. We then gathered in the hospital Chapel, Der Nareg invited the children to reflect on their experience, to not take anything for granted and to pray for the sick and less fortunate.

This first outing showed the youth in our group how rewarding it can be to connect with those in need and spend time and resources helping other kids their own age who are going through medical challenges during the holidays.
Thank you to the families for their generous donations that made this event possible and to Der Nareg for taking the initiative on this event and accompanying us.

The Salt and Light Group of St Sarkis Church has three pillars of participation being Christian education, Social Gatherings, and Outreach.  This event was fulfilling the Outreach section. Those interested in joining or helping with the Salt and Light Youth Group can contact the church office at 718-224-2275 or via email at [email protected].

THE  EPISTLE OF ST. PAUL TO THE HEBREWS (13.18-25)
Pray for us. We are sure that we have a clear conscience and desire to live honorably in every way. I particularly urge you to pray so that I may be restored to you soon.
May the God of peace, who through the blood of the eternal covenant brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep, equip you with everything good for doing his will, and may he work in us what is pleasing to him, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.
Brothers, I urge you to bear with my word of exhortation, for I have written you only a short letter. I want you to know that our brother Timothy has been released. If he arrives soon, I will come with him to see you.
Greet all your leaders and all God's people.
Those from Italy send you their greetings.
Grace be with you all.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO LUKE (22.24-30)
Also a dispute arose among them as to which of them was considered to be greatest. Jesus said to them, "The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those who exercise authority over them call themselves Benefactors. But you are not to be like that. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the youngest, and the one who rules like the one who serves. For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves. You are those who have stood by me in my trials. And I confer on you a kingdom, just as my Father conferred one on me, so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

Liturgical Calendar (Crossroads)
HOLY APOSTLE JAMES AND JOHN THE EVANGELIST
Saturday December 29 the Armenian Church commemorates the Holy Apostle James and John the Evangelist, "Sons of Thunder." Both held prominent positions among the twelve apostles, and they were called "Sons of Thunder" by Jesus (Mark 3:17) probably because they were impetuous and quick tempered as suggested in Luke 9:54 and Mark 10:35-41.James was a Galilean fisherman, who was called along with his brother John, to be two of the twelve apostles. They, together with Peter, formed the inner core among the twelve who were present at the raising of the daughter of Jarius, the Transfiguration, and the agony of Gethsemane. James was the first of the apostles to be martyred by order of Herod Agrippa (Acts 12:1-2). He is the patron saint of Spain and according to tradition his body was brought from Jerusalem to Santiago de Compostela, which became and continues to be a popular destination for pilgrims. John is also known as "The Divine." It was to John that Jesus on the cross entrusted the care of his mother. Paul names Peter, John, and James as the "pillars" of the Church (Galatians 2:9).

PAREGENTAN OF THE FAST OF THE NATIVITY
Saturday, December 29, is the Paregentan or Eve of the Fast of the Nativity that leads us to the celebration of the birth and baptism of our Lord and Savior on January 6.
