An Afternoon with
Eleanor Roosevelt
Join us on
Tues., Jan. 15 at 2:00 p.m. for "An Afternoon with Eleanor Roosevelt," featuring author and historian Carol Cohen. (
Snow day is Tues., January 22.) During this presentation that looks into the life of Eleanor Roosevelt, you'll meet Roosevelt at her home, learn about her role as a human rights activist, and inspect many primary sources that were very much a part of Roosevelt's personal and professional life. Cohen's interactive presentation focuses on Roosevelt after the death of her husband, President Franklin D. Roosevelt, when she was living at Val Kill on her own. The program is part portrayal and part presentation.
Cohen currently works at Lesley University and is a published historian and playwright. She owns an educational consulting company and is currently writing the book "Begin with a Box."

Let's Talk Taxes!
The experts from H&R Block will be here at 6:00 p.m., Wed., Jan 16, to tell you about the multitude of changes coming for the 2018 tax year.
There will be a presentation on the most significant changes, such as the entirely new 1040 form and the elimination of the 1040EZ form. There also will be plenty of time for your questions.
If you're interested in the program, but can't make it, please let us know as we're considering adding a second session.

An Iceland Travelogue
with Dana Zaiser
Join us for an educational and entertaining travelogue trip to Iceland with Dana Zaiser,
Wed., Jan. 30 at 6:30 p.m.
Loaded with exciting pictures, videos, and historical information, Zaiser's presentation will focus on his 2018 trip to Iceland.
This presentation is suitable for all age groups, and is made possible thanks to the support of the Friends of the Middleborough Public Library.

Sensory Storytime Yoga -- Sensory Storytime Yoga is a collaboration with the Heart in Art. This is for children who would do best in a small group environment. This month we will be reading Jan Brett's

Book Swap -- Kids can trade in gently used books for new reads at the YMCA on
Sat., Jan. 19, 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
Homeschool Snap Circuits Group -- Homeschool families are encouraged to meet up at the Library once a month for Snap Circuits. Try your hand at the rover set, arcade, motion and more! The first meeting will take place on
Thurs., Jan. 24 at 1:00 p.m.
Play on Purpose Caregiver/Child Workshop -- Early Education expert Kelly Rodriguez brings her hands-on workshop to the Library on
Wed., Jan. 30 from 10:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. for families with children ages 3-6. Learn how to set boundaries, manage emotions, build and maintain positive relationships, follow rules and routines, and problem solve effectively. Space is limited. Call or stop by to register.

Your Favorite Children's Programs Return
Regular children's programs start back up in January. Check the
Library's calendar for specific dates and special events.
Mondays from 4:00 p.m. - 6:20 p.m. Reading to Miss Marilyn's Spaniels. Sign up for a 20-minute time slot and read to a therapy dog in a relaxed and non-judgmental setting. Call or stop by the Library to register.
Tuesdays from 4:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Lego-mania! Come build with the Library's Legos and Duplos. All ages are welcome; no registration required.
Wednesdays from 10:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m. Preschool Storylabs combine stories with science, technology, engineering, art and math concepts. Lots of hands-on activities. Best for kids ages 3-6 and their families. Check the calendar for special guests and dates that require registration.
Thursdays at 10:15 a.m. Baby Bookworms. Meet up with other moms and babies ages birth- 18 months for stories, songs and rhymes. Toys from the Library will be provided after the 20-minute formal program. Meet in the Library's Large Meeting Room. No registration required.
Thursdays at 11:15 a.m. Wiggles & Giggles. Join moms and toddlers 18 months - 3 years of age for books, music and movement. Meet in the Library's Large Meeting Room. Library toys will be available after the 20-minute formal program. No registration required.
Pokemon Kids will meet to play and talk about the game on Sat., Jan. 19 at 1:00 p.m. No registration required.

Don't Forget Your Library Card!
The new year brings new ways to use your Library! Middleborough High School students are reminded to bring their public library cards to school on
Tues., Jan. 8 for the Middleborough Public Library's
Pop-Up Library appearing for the first time in the school cafeteria during all four lunch periods. Students will have the opportunity to borrow materials, learn about library programs and services, and register for a library card.
Teen Librarian Chris Dargelis will be available with books, movies, video games, and more
on the first Tuesday of every month.

Those teens who don't have a card can sign up for one: students 16+ can register and borrow items immediately, while students 15 and under will need to take home a registration form for their parent or guardian to sign. Materials can be returned either to the MHS or public library.

Friends of the Library
Annual Meeting
The Friends of the Middleborough Public Library will hold their annual meeting on
Thurs., Jan. 17, 6:30 p.m., in the Library's Administration office on the second floor.
The group will be electing new officers for its Board of Directors. Those interested in volunteering time on the Board are encouraged to attend.
The meeting is open to all.

This Month's Marvelous Museum Pass
With habitats featuring sharks, stingrays, jellies and more, you can explore the depths of our ocean planet like never before at the Mystic Aquarium. Discover the beauty and mystery of underwater worlds that house thousands of colorful fish and exotic marine animals. Indulge your sense of adventure by looking through, crawling under and even reaching into unique displays.
The Roger Tory Peterson Penguin Exhibit offers above- and below-water viewing for more than 35 resident African penguins. Feeding times vary through the day so check the schedule as you arrive at the Aquarium.
Visit the largest outdoor beluga whale exhibit in the United States, featuring an acre of glacial streams, northern evergreens and crystal blue water. Hear from trainers during a feeding and training session and learn how the belugas' natural behaviors help them to survive.
These exhibits and many more can be visited at the Mystic Aquarium with the Library's pass which entitles the holder to $5 off the general ticket price for up to four people.

can go to the home page of the Library's website and directly access Novelist Plus, "the secret to finding your next great read?" A trusted source of expert book suggestions, NoveList Select has reading recommendations for fiction and nonfiction, for all ages.
You can also access Novelist through the catalog. Open an item's record by clicking on the title, and then either:
1. Scroll down to the "Discover More: Recommendations & Reviews" tab, to find reading recommendations for both authors and book titles that are similar to the item you're looking at. You can even click on the "Why this match?" button to find out why Novelist is recommending a particular title. If the book is a series, Novelist also will display the other titles in that series.
2. See the Novelist bar on the far right of your screen and click on one of the blue links such as "Similar Series" or Similar Authors."
Ask a staff member to show you the basics of Novelist Select or try it out for yourself the next time you're searching for an item in the catalog.
