Greetings!
I love it when God answers prayers before I even get around to asking them!
At the February TMA luncheon, Lisa Chastain and others shared about the amazing God stories taking
place at the Center of Opportunity. As a quick recap, a local businessman bought a hotel and leased it to the Gospel Rescue Mission, who is collaborating with over 20 additional nonprofits and ministries to provide a one-stop shop for the homeless – everything from shelter to meals to medical/dental to recovery to job training to long term housing. When I heard that part of the vision was for this to be a prototype for other communities around the country, I got even more excited.
Lisa and I scheduled a followup tour so I could see the progress in the renovation. In our “power hour” together, we discussed a number of exciting possibilities. One of them is that as God opens up doors of opportunity in other communities for bringing government, business, faith-based and non-profit sectors together, J17 Ministries could come alongside with what we’re learning about bringing the body of Christ together. What a powerful combination that would be!
As the conversation continued, she suggested something I hadn’t even fully realized as a long-term need of ours. It had only been about a week that we even had a staff beyond me, so long term office space wasn’t on the radar. (Northminster Presbyterian had graciously provided our short-term emergency needs for space.) She suggested, “J17 Ministries needs to office here!” Both strategically and practically, that makes so much sense. But check this out: they anticipate space being available at the first of May – which is exactly when we’ll need it as one of our current staff transitions from part-time to
full-time with J17 Ministries starting the first of May.
Who knew that when your whole focus is aligning with Jesus’ prayer, He might already have been at work answering it?!

As the name implies, J17 Ministries is all about aligning hearts with Jesus’ heart as expressed in John 17. J17 Ministries is a big idea, but with practical implications in every city.
Introducing… Daniel Drum, Social Media
Drum, Drum… that name sounds kinda familiar… Yes, Daniel is Dave Drum’s son. Daniel is a volunteer staff person helping develop our social media platform. Daniel has career aspirations in photography and social media, utilizing YouTube and other outlets to do ministry in the world of online gaming. (Check out the YouTube channel Kuhani Gaming if you’re interested!) Besides what he’s been learning on his own, he’s recently been taking a digital marketing class to improve his skill set. Daniel currently lives in Las Vegas with some friends, and needs your prayers as he tries to work with his soon-to-be-eligible-for-senior-discounts father.

But what do you do?
I was asked that question recently about J17 Ministries. What do we do? The last five-part series in this Harmony Hub column examined how Jesus prayed for our unity. We ought to know what we’re praying and striving for, and recognize it when we see it! But that series was mostly Biblical insight from Jesus Himself. What do we do?
- We promote ways God is uniting the Body of Christ in our city – like last weekend’s Tucson Worship Conference, and cool congregational partnerships that others can benefit from, like this week’s Five-Fold Giftedness Seminar promo. How often are leaders from a predominantly African-American Pentecostal church invited to train people from a predominantly Anglo Lutheran church? Answer: more often all the time.
- We provide leadership and support for high-profile citywide programs, like Tucson Ministry Alliance, Pastor Prayer Summits, and John 17 Weekends.
- We’re relational conduit between people and one another, ministries, etc. Almost every day we’re able to connect needs and opportunities.
- We’re creating platforms where we can learn from one another around the country and world – including conferences like the International Wholistic Missions Conference, and guest columnists for our weekly e-newsletter.
- Mostly, we’re following Jesus. This is His prayer, His heartbeat, and He keeps showing us new places He’s inviting us to walk that He’s already prepared in advance. We’re eager to learn and eager to share what we’ve learned wherever God invites us.

Caring for the "least of these" at the CODAC MAT clinic
I accepted an invitation in January 2019 from Cynthia Purcell, Community Educator for
CODAC MAT Clinic
, to tour the new facility located at
380 E. Fort Lowell Rd
. The MAT clinic is
Medication Assisted Treatment
for heroin and other opioids. They provide help with withdrawal symptoms, case management and peer support, psychiatry and therapy, primary medical care, support groups and more. Not sure of what to expect or what I would see, I came with an open mind and was surprised and quite excited about the facility and the possibilities that Cynthia shared as we observed, talked and brainstormed about bringing the church into the arena of serving people with addictions.
Several scriptures come to mind to inspire the church to care for widows and orphans, the stranger and foreigner, and, without exception, to the sick and those with addictions as well. Individuals with opioid addiction are among those in need of compassion and healing as our Lord describes in the gospels. CODAC MAT Clinic is doing a part the work, but are there other resources?
One thing Cynthia shared that could be classified as “care” coming from the Church in Tucson is that someone take the time to simply come and sit with a patient/client in the waiting room as support of their commitment to stop using heroin and other opioids; having someone to talk to and just being there could mean so much to the one who is waiting and anticipating their specialized medicinal treatment. “Care” can also be more complex in terms of personal coaching and mentoring as a person in addiction begins to carve out a new existence that is free from drug dependence. As I mentioned, Cynthia’s ideas are inspirations, yet to be decided upon and agreed to, but a great vision nonetheless with strong probability of fulfillment. Would it not show to the persons involved and to the world the love of God in Jesus Christ, being worked out and fulfilled in His body, the church?
Galatians 6:2 (NASB)
says “Bear one another’s burdens, and thereby fulfill the law of Christ.” Although details of how partnerships between CODAC MAT Clinic and local church assemblies are yet to be developed, I encourage each of you reading this to consider yourself in the vision as a person whom the Apostle Paul envisioned as carrying another person’s burden. Many opportunities exist for churches in Tucson to partner with agencies and government to support people who are in crises or in bondage; to bring them out and in to a place of well-being and wholeness. The ultimate reward is that the Lord is glorified and we all get to live in healthier communities. Maybe another person receives salvation from sin.
