- Mt. Lookout Community Council Update -
Hello Mt. Lookout!

We had a record turnout at our last community meeting on Feb. 25 - nearly 200 people! Thank you to all who attended. The core of our discussion centered on development in Mt. Lookout, including the City of Cincinnati's new Subdivision Rules and Regulations as well as the 30-unit housing development being proposed by Redstone MTL, LLC, on Linwood Avenue, between Beverly Hill and Sheffield. If you have any thoughts that you'd like to share but didn't get the chance yet, comments are still being accepted through our online comment sheet.

As we mentioned at the meeting, the Mt. Lookout Community Council (MLCC) is also working on organizing a community discussion about tax abatements with representatives of the City's Community and Development Department and City Council's Economic and Zoning Committee. It's our intent to use this session to learn more about the program and how it works, ask questions and share feedback from our neighborhood. We have not yet finalized a meeting date, but hope to have that scheduled in the very near future. We will let you know as soon as a date is confirmed.

In the meantime, below is information about related discussion opportunities that are coming up  very soon. We hope you find this information helpful.

Sincerely,
The MLCC Board

F air Tax Abatement Strategies for Neighborhoods
This Thursday, March 146:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Westwood United Methodist Church
4360 Epworth Avenue

On February 26, the Woman's City Club of Cincinnati hosted a city-wide forum on "Finding Balance in Neighborhood Development." The discussion explored what are healthy neighborhoods and what is healthy development. A livestream of the event can be viewed on this Facebook link. Several MLCC board members attended this meeting.

A follow up forum scheduled for THIS THURSDAY will explore "Fair Tax Abatement Strategies for Neighborhoods." This session will focus on the upcoming expiration of the 1999 Tax Exemption Agreement, which sets the rules around how tax abatements are negotiated between the Cincinnati Public School Board and the City of Cincinnati. Any re-negotiation of this Agreement has the potential to make significant changes in how our city does development. Implications include: school funding, affordable housing, gentrification, community input on development proposals, environment, transit, and more. This session will have an introduction on the 1999 Agreement, and how neighborhoods currently are included (or not) in development deals, how abatements affect all of us, and how only some pay their full property tax bill. There will be moderated breakouts by topic including transit, school funding, gentrification, preservation, affordable housing, and more. Additional information is available here.

Property Tax Public Meeting
Tuesday, April 2, 2019 | 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.
William H. Taft Elementary School
270 Southern Avenue, 45219

In September 2018, Vice Mayor Smitherman and Councilmembers Mann, Dennard and Young, submitted a motion that established the Property Tax Working Group. The purpose of this Working Group is to study trends related to property taxes, especially the issue of rising property taxes in areas experiencing significant levels of development; to make recommendations to City Council aimed at helping to keep senior citizens in their homes and communities; and to report on best practices in other cities and states facing similar challenges. Additionally, the working group will review the City's Tax Abatement Program.

This Group's next meeting is a PUBLIC MEETING to be held at Taft Elementary School on Tuesday, April 2nd, 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.  A core purpose of this meeting is to gather input from local communities about issues of most concern to them related to property taxes. Information gathered at this meeting will be used to help guide the direction of the Working Group.

Following the public meeting, the Property Tax Working Group will continue to meet on a monthly basis. Its next meeting is scheduled at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 18, 2019 at City Hall, 801 Plum Street, Committee Room B, Room 312. Additional information is available on the City's Property Tax Working Group website.
