EMPOWERING A CARING COMMUNITY THAT PROMISES THE WELL-BEING OF EVERY CHILD
March 2019
Spring. We get it.  Everyone loves you because you're the season that comes after winter.  Things start warming up, the flowers bloom in beautiful, vibrant colors and the birds sing.  We don't have to bundle up any more and for that, we will be forever grateful.

Honestly, Spring cannot get here fast enough.

Yet, thanks to the kindness, passion, and energy of our vibrant community, we've warmed up just a little and celebrated many successes.

Help us to  Empower a caring community that promises the well-being of every child.

Creative Learning Earns Top Child Care Rating

Raven Walker, of Creative Learning Childcare and Preschool, has been recognized with the highest rating possible by Iowa's Quality Rating System for her commitment to quality child care and education.  With this designation, Walker's child development home joins a premier group of child care programs that maintains the rating of five out of five stars.

With 90 percent of brain development occurring before age 5, early child care and education is crucial to a child's future success.  Early learning builds the foundation for skills needed in school, work and life.  Studies show that children who receive quality early child care and education are more likely to show improved reading and math skills, attend college and earn higher wages.

16 to 24 Year Olds.  Disconnected  from
School and Work. Struggling  Just to Survive.

Thousands of young adults age 16 to 24 are disconnected from both work and school in our community - oftentimes due to a lack of education, job skills, financial resources or mental health services. But our town is doing something really powerful to help them find the support they need to get back on their feet.
The State of Babies Yearbook: 2019 multi_ethnic_babies.jpg

For the 12 million infants and toddlers in the United States, the state where they are born and live during their first three years makes a big difference in their chance for a strong start in life.

The littlest among us face big challenges, and we can't afford to squander the potential of a single child.

For the first time, the State of Babies Yearbook: 2019 compares national and state-by-state data on the well-being of infants and toddlers.

Substance Misuse During Pregnancy

Substance misuse can cause serious problems for both pregnant women and her baby.  Home visitors are in a unique position to identify substance misuse among pregnant women.  They can also connect expectant mothers to community resources, creating better health outcomes for the mother and her baby.   Use this information from the Head Start Early Childhood Learning & Knowledge Center to explore substance misuse among pregnant women.  Learn talking points to use during a home visit, and find resources to support the expectant family.
