JANUARY NEWS 
2019
Dear Friend of MCF,

It's hard to believe another year is upon us.  We have many important projects to look forward to as the year begins: two, possibly three farmland preservation projects in Colts Neck, a major addition to Allaire State Park in Wall Township, a waterfront park in Neptune Township and continued teaching about nature through the Kids for Conservation program.

We were happy to end 2018 with the acquisition of an important parcel of land in Millstone that will help maintain wildlife habitat and protect water quality of the headwaters of the Toms River.  Please read more about it below along with some other interesting reads that I hope you'll both enjoy and be inspired by.

Nature's Architects Have a Permanent Home in Millstone

Burnt Tavern Road, Millstone Township - Behind the stores and shopping malls on the border of Jackson and Millstone Townships, lies an untouched piece of land that will now remain that way forever thanks to a partnership between Millstone Township, Monmouth Conservation Foundation, the NJ DEP Green Acres Program and the County of Monmouth. Could Ice Skating & Fishing on the Navesink Be In Store For Us?  Maybe

Navesink and Shrewbury River locals still reflect on the "good ole days" of ice skating and ice fishing on the frozen river.  Some studies suggest that that abnormally warm Arctic temperatures make severe winters in the Northeast two to four times more likely. Climate Change will mean different things to different people and places.  One thing is for sure - the frequency of heavy precipitation and storm events is increasing.  To read more about the study and how it may impact us this winter click here and make sure your snow shovel is ready!

Why Aren't There More Organic Farms?

The choice to go organic is complicated and risky for farmers, and barriers prevent many farmers from switching. However, organic food sales have doubled over the last decade.  To mitigate risk, some farmers are partnering with organic food brands.  Read the full article here .

Top Three Easiest Climate Resolutions for the New Year!

Small Changes Can Have Big Impacts.  Start 2019 off right with these tips. 

1. Walk or bike distances under a mile instead of using your vehicle.  Exercising more is top of the list for many people.  Burn fat, not fossil fuels when making local trips.

2. Always use your own reusable shopping bags.  We know you always leave them in the car, but simply go back out and get them.  In fact, say no to single use plastic of any kind this year.

3. Eat less meat.  You don't have to go vegetarian to make in impact on one of the largest contributors to greenhouse gases, industrially farmed meat.  Go meatless one day a week and commit to higher quality, organic meats that are sustainably raised.
