Transfiguration of Our Lord / Last Sunday after Epiphany: Lifting the Veil

The transfiguration is frustrating for disciples-past and present-who long for an unmediated experience of God. Jesus' glory is revealed, and then, just as suddenly, a cloud descends and the vision fades. And even though Paul contrasts the Christian's experience of God with Moses's veiled experience of God, he notes that we see the glory of the Lord "as though reflected in a mirror" (2 Cor. 3:18). Even with unveiled faces, we don't see directly, or even clearly. Even when God is revealed in shining glory, much remains veiled and hidden.
As he witnesses Jesus' transfiguration, Peter's understanding remains veiled; ours does too. The glimpses we get of God's glory-through the veil or reflected in the mirror-are expectation-shattering, alarming, overwhelming, and

awesome. The love of God shines too brightly to view directly, and yet we do have the privilege of directly experiencing that love in baptism, in communion, in service to God, and in relationship with God's creation and our neighbors in need. The veils we contend with daily are the barriers that prevent us from truly loving those neighbors, caring for creation, and seeing the shining face of Jesus in the faces of people who are different, hungry, difficult, enemy, invisible, or poor. God is always revealed in ways that surprise and confuse us, whether shining on the mountaintop or dying on the cross. [Sundays and Seasons, 2019]

See you in worship as we reflect on the veils in our life that keep us from seeing and sharing the brightness of God's love.

Contemplative Prayer Resources for Lent

We may think of prayer as thoughts or feelings expressed in words. But this is only one expression. In the Christian tradition Contemplative Prayer is considered to be the pure gift of God. It is the opening of mind and heart - our whole being - to God, the Ultimate Mystery, beyond thoughts, words, and emotions. Through grace we open our awareness to God whom we know by faith is within us, closer than breathing, closer than thinking, closer than choosing - closer than consciousness itself. Message from Susan, All Saints' Earth Care Missioner

Lent begins next Wednesday.  Many of you add a spiritual discipline to your regular practices for the 40 days of Lent.  This year I invite you to try a Carbon Fast. A carbon fast is a great way to make small personal changes, while also drawing attention to our society's unsustainable love affair with carbon putting our island home at risk due to climate change.  Little steps can add up to big results.
Each week, beginning on Ash Wednesday, I will present a theme and suggest an action for each day of the week.
Week 1: March 6-12  Focus on Food:
Wed, March 6: Try and eat local and seasonal foods that do not have to travel far to get to your table.
Thurs, March 7:Utilize winter go-to foods like mushrooms, potatoes, onions, carrots, sweet potatoes, winter squash and garlic. Add them to soups, stews and one-pot dishes for comforting cold-weather meals.
Friday, March 8: Be mindful of what's in your pantry and rotate any food that sits in bins as well as what's in the refrigerator, using it before it goes bad to reduce food waste.
Saturday, March 9:  Make plans to visit the Wolfeboro Winter Farmer's Market, open 10am-2pm next Saturday, March 16 at the First Congregational Church, 115 South Main St.  Wolfeboro
Sunday, March 10: All those vegetables and fruits from your garden, farmers market, or CSA that are preserved, canned, frozen, or dried make wonderful winter-time ingredients, adding variety to your seasonal fresh fare. If you don't get involved in preserving foods, buy canned, frozen, or dried items.

Meet Your New Vestry Leaders
A reading from First Corinthians: There are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of services, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. (1 Corinthians 12:4-7)

Pam is a lifelong Episcopalian, originally from Attleboro, MA. Pam says her faith in Christ has strengthened when she moved from Rochester to Farmington and then to Wolfeboro a year ago. She has been given the strength and courage to carry on following the death of her husband seven years ago and her mom four years ago. Pam says Jesus is her guiding str, but mostly her savior and light in the dark. Pam has participated in Outreach Luncheons, Harvest and Last Night Lasagna Suppers, noting how much fellowship and togetherness there is in our All Saints' parish family, and has recently become the treasurer for Episcopal Church Women.

Pam tries daily to follow the footsteps Jesus has shown and believes the prayer of confession says it all. She finds herself talking to God and listening, knowing that God answers in God's time and not hers. She is a compassionate person, tries not to judge, and to put others before herself. Pam loves people, is not afraid of hard work and gives all she can in service to others. She is a retired nurse and spent 44 years loving and caring for others, especially for those who were dying with no family present.

The most precious thing in Pam's life are her children and grandchildren, as they give her unforgettable joy. Memories of her late husband are present daily, bringing smiles and sometimes tears. Friends are dear to her and they often gather as a group and laugh. Pam also loves to cook and is a quilter. She notes that her life is full of Jesus and the Father and she's proud to share with family and friends that she belongs to All Saints' Church, something that is so rewarding in her life. Pam looks forward to serving as a vestry member.
Bible Study for Lent: Beneath the Cross of Jesus
We live our lives beneath the cross of Jesus, beneath God's manifold love and grace that reach to us even from Calvary. Based on the hymn "Beneath the cross of Jesus" (Hymnal 1982 #498), this series explores what it means for us to abide at the foot of the cross, to cling to the rock of our salvation, to dwell in the house of the Lord, and to confess our sins and receive God's forgiveness. Join us for any of the sessions: Week 1 I Long to Take My Stand, Week 2 The Shadow of a Weary Rock Within a Weary Land, Week 3 A Home With the Wilderness a Home Along the Way, Week 4 From the Contrite Heart with Tears, Week 5 I Take O Cross Your Shadow for my Abiding Place.
