EVANS WEEKLY
Issue: #29
March 8, 2019
Dear Panther Parents,

How crazy is it that we are ¾ of the way through this school year?!?!  Let's make the fourth quarter the best one yet!!

Spring Break is next week.  We will see everyone back on campus March 18th.

Report cards will be viewable on HAC on March 20th.

Hoops for Heart has been a HUGE success and our goal has been met.  Thank you so much for supporting such an incredible cause.  It is so worth getting the pie to the face during half time of our Hoops for Heart Staff vs. Panthers basketball game!

It is looking like the crazy Texas weather is going to allow us to take advantage of a "bad weather day", so plan something fun with the fam on March 29th and take advantage of that extra three-day weekend.

Happy Friday,
Darla

      NOTES FROM OUR NURSE

 6th GRADERS NEED IMMUNIZATIONS UPDATED!

6th grade students need to turn in proof of immunization requirements BEFORE May 28th to get their schedule over the summer and attend 7th grade next fall. Texas State Law requires that 7th grade students for the 2019-2020 school year show proof of the following immunizations:
Tetanus/Diphtheria/Pertussis (Tdap) within the past 5 years
Meningococcal vaccine (one dose) within the past 5 years
(On top of the immunizations that were required for elementary)
Your child may have already had these immunizations. Please provide the school nurse with a current list of your student's immunizations .
Please make sure that your student receives any needed immunizations before the end of this school year.
Spring Break makes for a great time to get these updated!

Thank you for your cooperation in this matter

Thank you!

WARNING; DISICIPLENARY ACTION FOR E-CIGS ON CAMPUS
McKinney ISD Warns Students and Parents of Consequences of E-Cigs
McKinney ISD and school districts across the United States are dealing with a serious issue related to student possession and usage of electronic cigarettes, also known as vape pens or vapes. Electronic cigarettes are showing up in our schools in a variety of shapes and sizes (learn more about what to look for by clicking on the links below). E-Cigs can easily be mistaken as flash drives or thumb drives and one E-Cig pod (refillable liquid) can be equivalent to 20 cigarettes. In many cases, 4-5 refill pods can be purchased for under $20. If McKinney ISD students are caught with E-Cigs they will face suspension and placement in an alternative school. Students will also be referred to our local courts for being a minor in possession of tobacco.
We are now beginning to confiscate more E-Cigs that are testing positive for THC, the chemical found in Marijuana. Students have become extremely ill as a result of the high concentration of the drug in the oils and its impact on developing body chemistry. These are extremely dangerous and students found in possession will be prosecuted to the fullest extent that the law allows.
If students are caught with THC pens, or they are under the influence while on a McKinney ISD campus, they will immediately be referred to the Juvenile Justice Alternative Education Placement (JJAEP), face expulsion from McKinney ISD, and face charges that could result in a state jail felony. Cannabidiol (CBD) oil or products with CBD or THC will not be administered by the nurse or other school personnel, stored in the clinic or allowed to be carried by students. These items fall under the MISD No Tolerance Policy. McKinney ISD staff, teachers and our School Resource Officers will continue to be diligent in holding students responsible, and we will continue random drug dog searches at our schools.
Parents can help by talking to your children about the dangers of electronic cigarettes and the seriousness of the consequences (suspension, expulsion, and possible felony charges). In addition, be diligent and aware of the contents of your child's backpack, clothing, vehicle and room. We will continue to update you on trends in our community and warnings from the McKinney Police Department and the Surgeon General. In addition, we invite you to learn more about the dangers of e-cigarretes and what to look for by visiting the following links:

PTO

PTO Board Looking for New Faces
Every year, your PTO board raises money to benefit our students, our staff, and our school. We put on programs and pay for special events ... and we have a lot of fun doing it. Due to "graduations" to high school, we are losing three long-time volunteers:  our Spirit Wear Coordinator, our Concessions Coordinator, and our PTO Club Liaison. All three positions have volunteers willing and able to help any "newbies," along with thorough notebooks detailing past experiences. Please consider joining us in one of these positions. Make a difference in your child's school and for your child's teachers! Email julieluton67@gmail.com for more information.

Spirit wear will be sold during lunches. The dates for Spirit Wear sales are:

May 10

      LEARNING COMMONS

"Everybody is smart in different ways. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its life believing it is stupid."

Ally has been smart enough to fool a lot of smart people. However, her newest teacher Mr. Daniels sees the bright, creative kid underneath the trouble maker. With his help, Ally learns not to be so hard on herself and that dyslexia is nothing to be ashamed of. As her confidence grows, Ally feels free to be herself and the world starts opening up with possibilities. She discovers that there's a lot more to her-and to everyone-than a label, and that great minds don't always think alike.

TWO NEW WAYS TO SUPPORT YOUR SCHOOL

It's easier than ever for you to make a difference at Evans! We have two new ways for you to support our school while you shop, without any extra cost to you.

Do you shop at Kroger? Evans Middle School PTO is now enrolled with Kroger's Community Rewards program. If you already have a Kroger Rewards Card, log in to your account at www.kroger.com and then click Enroll. You can search for Evans Middle School PTO or enter our code, AF012. New users will need to create an account, which requires some basic information, a valid email address, and a Rewards Card. You must have a registered Kroger Rewards Card account to link it to our school. If you don't have a card, they a
re available at the customer service desk at any Kroger. Then each time you shop at Kroger, swipe your card or use the phone number related to your card. Then PTO will take the proceeds to help our students and staff!

When you shop through Amazon Smile, Evans Middle School PTO will receive 0.5% of most purchases to fund programs, events, and grants at our school. To get started, designate Evans PTO as your charitable organization by going to https://smile.amazon.com/ch/57-1206927. Then every time you shop, start at smile.amazon.com and our school will benefit (at no cost to you!).
Please share these ways to support Evans Middle School with friends. Thanks for your support!

 WE LOVE OUR VOLUNTEERS!

We are so lucky to have so many wonderful volunteers who make it possible for us to make our school the very best it can be!  Please remember that if you are a returning volunteer, or maybe a first time MISD volunteer, that you must go online to fill out a Volunteer Application and be approved before you can serve in any capacity where you will have contact with students.  Sometimes this takes a couple of weeks, so please do it as soon as possible!  We need you!!!
Click HERE to go directly to the link.
Thank you so very much!  We look forward to having you on our campus!
Note:
Volunteer applications may take up to two weeks to be processed.
If after two weeks you have not been contacted regarding your volunteer status, please contact MISD Human Resources at 469-302-4117. DO NOT contact staff members at schools regarding your volunteer application. Your application is a confidential matter.
Once you are approved, you will be able to volunteer in the district throughout the school year.

      SCHOOL SAFETY

A critical ingredient in the safe school recipe is the uniform classroom response to any incident. Weather events, fires, accidents, intruders and other threats to student safety are scenarios that are planned and trained for by all McKinney ISD schools and District Administration and staff. Historically, schools have taken this scenario-based approach to respond to hazards and threats. Each McKinney ISD classroom is furnished with the Standard Response Protocol poster that provides teachers with readily accessible response procedures and provides information during a crisis event. The attached handout explains Standard Response Protocol that is taught to students, faculty and staff.

Please click the link below to view the Standard Response Protocol parent handout.

   STUDENT FOOD DELIVERY

Due to a variety of safety concerns related to food allergies and campus safety and security,  McKinney ISD will no longer allow students to utilize food delivery services at school. This includes services such as Uber Eats, Doordash and direct restaurant delivery. However, parents/guardians will still be permitted to drop food off for their children.

This rule does not apply to deliveries organized by McKinney ISD faculty or a teacher serving as a sponsor of a student organization. We appreciate your cooperation in our efforts to create a safe and secure environment for students.
