Sefer Yetzirah is an ancient work of Jewish mysticism. This brief and cryptic book imagines letters as the building blocks of the universe, focusing our attention on the components of space, time, and soul and the elements of air, fire, and water.  We will read sections from the book to understand the practices of Sefer Yetzirah and their potential role in contemporary Jewish belief and contemplative practice. We will also be using the book to meditate and reflect on our own spiritual experience.

It can happen in a single moment or over time, but our lives shift. What we cannot control—illness, trauma, loss, mystery—disrupts the narrative we have been writing for ourselves. We become strangers to ourselves and isolated from others. In this workshop on writing about physical and mental illness, prompts will be given to guide our exploration into our inner narrative, both including illness as well as the larger context of life.
