Cultural Excursions with Martin County Arts
A heads up for anyone considering joining the Arts Council of Martin County ’s 2020 Cultural Excursion to Italy: The first two in the Excursion series sold out and 80 percent of those who went on the first one signed up for the second.

Laura Daniel, staff coordinator of the excursions, said people enjoy sharing a cultural experience with others who have similar interests in the arts. “The experience is filled with aspects of the visual, performing, music, and culinary arts along with cultural experiences unique to the location we visit.”

The first excursion took travelers to Tanglewood and Lennox, Mass. This summer, they’re off to Santa Fe, New Mexico, where they’ll hear Puccini at Santa Fe Opera; visit the Georgia O'Keefe Museum, the International Folk Art Museum, the Indian Arts and Culture Museum, and the Santa Fe Museum of Art; explore the galleries of Canyon Road; learn to work with hot glass; and more.
That’s the July tour you’ll miss unless you’ve already booked your spot. In May 2020, the Cultural Excursion goes to Italy with stops in Venice, Florence, Rome, and Pompeii. Daniel said, “Our destinations so far have been chosen based on the variety of the arts one can experience in that region. … Our decision to go to Italy is in part tied into our 40 th anniversary and the gala we are planning for February 1, 2020. The Gala will have a Venetian Carnevale Theme.”
Daniel said she planned the Massachusetts and Santa Fe tours herself after conferring with the Arts Council team of Nancy Turrell and Marie Jureit-Beamish. The tour to Italy is mainly managed by a tour company that specializes in international travel, but the Arts Council will supplement their basic tour with tailored experiences and excursions. Among the highlights: St. Mark’s Basilica, the Uffizi Gallery, a Vatican tour, Villa D’Este and Hadrian’s Villa, Pompeii, guided tours of Venice, Florence, and Rome, a tour of the Amalfi Coast, and concerts in Florence and Rome.
An added benefit of the group tours for Daniel has been watching “the group dynamics develop, the families bonding over the experiences, and life long friendships form throughout the experience” She said one goal of the Cultural Excursion program is “to have the opportunity to connect with our members and supporters in a more intimate and meaningful way and to provide them with an unforgettable experience that also supports the endeavors they enjoy and the important work in the arts community that the Arts Council provides.”
For information on signing up and more details on the Cultural Excursion in May 2020, click here, or call Laura Daniel at 772-287-6676 ext. 6.
Artfully Helping People Succeed
There’s an art to making an unqualified success of programs designed to help people and Helping People Succeed has had it nailed for years. The HPS Art for Living calendar is a collection of art from top local artists from Indian River, Martin, St. Lucie and Okeechobee counties, assembled, shrink wrapped, and sold to raise funds for HPS programs. Each month’s page includes a selected painting, background on the artist, and a photo of that page’s artist, plus a page sponsor from an area business.

Photo:The 2019 Art for Living Calendar
Submissions for the 13-month calendar are still being accepted, but June 3 at 5 p.m. is the deadline. The theme can be a tropical scene, historical buildings, or Florida wildlife, as long as it depicts something local. Applications and guidelines are on the HPS website, www.hpsfl.org . Submissions are to include a completed application, a $25 entry fee, and a hi-res jpeg of the painting for the first judging. Questions should be addressed to Glenna Parris at gparris@hpsfl.org.

Another art-related fundraiser that supports specifically the Helping People Succeed’s Camp Success is the annual White Shirt Night. Here’s how it works: Ten local artists will gather at Taste Casual Dining in Hobe Sound June 22, displaying artwork featuring landscapes, seascapes, flora, fauna — and this year, a design “with a patriotic twist in honor of our soldiers. Veterans will receive 50 percent off when they register for the event,” Glenna Parris, gift planning officer for HPSFL said. Guests choose one for the artist to paint on a ball cap, apron, tote bag, or t-shirt.

A silent auction will add to the funds raised for Camp Success and a DJ will add to the fun. There are two ticket levels, $50 for general admission, including a drink, hors d’oeuvres, and a t-shirt, 6 - 9 p.m., and $100 for a VIP Meet and Greet with the artists plus an extra drink, hors d’oeuvres, and a paintable item.

Taste Casual Dining’s owners, Craig and Karen Kingston, have been hosts for this event starting 10 years ago. The restaurant is at 11750 SE Dixie Hwy., Hobe Sound.

Treasure Coast Theatre
The new theatre that opened in Port St. Lucie in April with On Golden Pond was the result of years of talking and dreaming and then another year of finding it a place to call home. Treasure Coast Theatre, Port St. Lucie’s only community theater, according to founders Rosemary Knight and Dawn Achin, is in the Town Centre Plaza, 10175 South Federal Hwy., Port St. Lucie. It seats 55, including four wheelchairs.

The location was the most challenging aspect of making it happen, Knight said. They needed a space large enough to accommodate seating, a stage, restrooms, and a large enough backstage area. On top of all that, it had to conform to fire and ADA codes. And then they had to get all the permits from the city. “It took over 2 years from start to finish. Even now, we need to devote a great deal of time and energy to marketing,” Knight said.
It took a theatre family to take it down the homestretch. Knight gives credit to volunteers Brian Pecci, Jennifer Critchlow, David and Aviva Eales, Michael and Angela Knittel, Samantha Knight and Adam Grossnicklaus. “Until now, most of our volunteers are people we have worked with at previous theaters.” The call for more has been put out on the TCC website, TCCtheatre.com , and a Facebook page.

Knight has been a “theatre geek” since her teen years, “earning a minor in theatre from Fordham University theatre program,” she said. She’s been involved in theater in several capacities in the Northeast and Florida, including running the summer camp program at the Barn Theatre in Stuart for two years.

This first season’s shows are what Knight and Achin call “passion projects,” plays they’ve always wanted to produce. The second season will be decided by a play reading committee that will determine which plays would appeal to their audience and can be easily produced on their stage.

Getting a late start made the first season a bit shorter than what’s ahead. The plan in future seasons is to produce 10 shows plus a holiday show. Also ahead, “shorter-run productions -- such as Reader's Theatre, Shakespeare, Children's Workshop Productions, etc. We also plan to offer acting classes for children and adults. Beginning in 2020, we will also offer a summer theatre camp for kids ages 10-16.”

The second show of the premier season is a joneshopewooten comedy, Last Roundup of the Guacamole Queens. Co-writers Jamie Wooten, Jessie Jones, and Nicholas Hope specialize in plays that make audiences laugh out loud and have been the source for many regional and community productions.

Last Roundup of the Guacamole Queens  opens May 31 at 8 p.m. The show runs through June 9. Performances are at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Tickets are $22. Group and student discounts are available. Call the box office, 772-418-2439.

Catching Up With Kathleen Piowaty Fredrick
In case there’s an Arts Blast reader who has not heard of A.E. “Bean” Backus, I’ll just send you to BackusMuseum.com to catch up. And in case some readers are familiar only with the fabulous, gorgeous, bright, beautiful, and many-other-descriptive-words Backus Museum & Gallery in Fort Pierce, I’ll invite you to come along as I catch up with Kathleen Fredrick, who brought those adjectives into play.

Fredrick had a stake in the town and the Backus legacy. She grew up “in an idyllic childhood. Fort Pierce was the quintessential Southern town.” After she hit 12, she spent most of her free time at Backus’ studio, ”hanging with other young people. Backus referred to us as his Backus brats."

Photo: Fredrick and Doretha Hair Truesdale, widow of Highwaymen founder, Alfred Hair, at the 2016 opening reception of the FAU Backus & Highwaymen exhibit.
I met Fredrick in the 1990s, when she was a guest on Arts Spotlight on WQCS, the NPR affiliate on the Indian River State (then Community) College campus. She was moving into the executive director’s slot at Backus, as I recall, and had a basketful of ideas for growing the gallery — not a museum at that point. I’ll be honest here. I recall that my first description of Fredrick would have been Feisty Young Woman.

It turns out I was right. It took her feistiness, determination, and vision to see what the small, open-part-time, art gallery could become. We talked often over the years and I was aware that progress was being made but I didn’t realize how much until this week, when I asked her what projects she began and finished in her almost 20 years on the job.

Photo: Fredrick and daughter Corinne at the FAU opening reception of the exhibit of A E Backus & Highwaymen paintings, 2016
Fredrick said the permanent collection grew from nine pieces to more than 100. The gallery went from four days a week, four hours a day to full-time hours. Fredrick created the gallery’s Internet presence and oversaw the publication of two books on Backus. She worked on and was featured in two PBS-aired documentaries. Working with the Board of Directors and volunteers, she was the driving force behind the museum’s multi-million dollar expansion. Fredrick said, “I transformed a community based, part-time gallery into an art museum with the only multi-media exhibit of Florida Highwaymen paintings, the nation’s largest exhibit of Backus paintings, and exhibiting works from national and international artists.”
Two years ago, Fredrick retired to Boquete, Panama, a place she had visited with her family in 1970. “Like Fort Pierce, Boquete is heavily influenced by agriculture. Like the Fort Pierce of my youth, it has a small town atmosphere with very low crime and everybody knows everybody.”

For a go-getter like Fredrick, retirement couldn’t be a permanent state. She’s starting a business, Florida Art Appraisals, that will have her in Panama and Florida, doing something she spent years doing without considering it for her future. Working with collection curators at Backus, “I have been facilitating the Museum’s appraisal of Backus and Highwaymen paintings for almost 20 years.” Fredrick said she “ate, breathed, and slept Florida art and knew their values the best.” Since her retirement, she has been getting requests to appraise and authenticate paintings, and “One day, the lightbulb went off in my head, and voila! Here I am.” Fredrick will be at the Backus Studio, 122 A.E.Backus Ave., F for appraisals June 1, 10 a.m. - 3 p.m., and June 2, 1 p.m. - 4 p.m.

With her daughter, Corinne, Fredrick purchased an abandoned coffee shop finca in Panama and they have plans in the works to develop it into a community of 10 landscaped villas, Finca Nueva Vida.

To contact Fredrick here or in Panama, email is best: Kathleen@Floridaartappraisals.com . The Backus Museum & Gallery is at 500 N. Indian River Dr., Fort Pierce.

Painting on a Wall with Kenny Maguire
Facebook on the Treasure Coast was alive with posts about Fort Pierce’s latest mural last week. Mural artist Kenny Maguire arrived from Tallahassee with gallons of paint and a handful of brushes to transform a plain and, frankly, boring wall outside 211 Depot Drive into a postcard from Fort Pierce. If you’re heading east on Orange Avenue, as you pass the railroad tracks, look to your right.

Maguire said, “This was commissioned by the VERY cool and very wonderful Kristina Gibbons, the owner of Varsity Sports here in Ft. Pierce. She said she liked a ‘postcard look,’ something to take photos in front of.” And that’s just what the artist delivered.
Photo: Before and After
This is far from Maguire’s first time freshening a local face. He’s painted somewhere in the neighborhood of 20 indoor and outdoor murals on the Treasure Coast. He said, “If you drive south on Ocean Drive from the jetty, you’ll pass about 6 of them within a mile.” His murals are also in Key West, Ohio, Massachusetts, North Dakota, and North Carolina, and his paintings on canvas have found homes around the world, he said.

Before brush touches wall, a lot of time, thought, and sketching are spent in preparation. Then it’s full steam ahead. For this mural, Maguire painted from sunup to sundown for five days straight, using exterior gloss acrylic paint. A big challenge was the rough, stucco-like texture “because I painted lettering,” he said. “Getting perfectly straight lines over stucco that rough is slow and challenging.”
From Maguire’s Facebook page:
“I always visualized Fort Pierce with this vintage look and feel, kinda carnival-ish meaning there was always something different around the corner or like you were about to walk into something fun and exciting. I really wanted to capture that. As the sun hits this artwork over time, it will obtain that vintage feel of old Fort Pierce. It will be something unique, vintage and fun which is what I was going for." – Kenny Maguire.

At the end of the project he was joined by his family for some R&R. Next, he said, “I go back to Tallahassee, and work in the studio until my next mural, which will be soon!”
Painting murals isn’t the only thing Maguire does. On the What is Your Occupation line, he writes Art, adding paintings on canvas and sculpture, and now “I’m in the process of editing a couple of art books. I love ALL of it!”

Maguire has a website, Patreon.com/kennymaguirestudio , but recommends his Facebook page for viewing photos of all his work.

ROAD TRIP! Around Lake Okeechobee
I'm taking what feels like the easy road this week for our Road Trip. Long-time friend Kathy Baumann suggested a link on the visitflorida.com website to "A DRIVING TOUR AROUND LAKE OKEECHOBEE," something I think about doing every summer when I drive out to Erickson's mango farm at Canal Point. Gary McKechnie wrote the tour, so I will just point you toward the site and let you enjoy his telling of a very pleasant Road Trip.
One personal caveat from an accidental, long-country-road Road Tripper: Make sure you fill your tank and don't pass up any opportunity to use a restroom. I'll just leave that there. Accidental in this case means I made a wrong turn trying to take the scenic route to Erickson's and had not taken the above advice.

Pretty much all the options are scenic and if you go when it's cool enough, roll down your windows or put the top down. Before you go, check Erickson's Facebook page. You won't find fresher mangos and avocados. They sell the trees, too, if you like the idea of growing your own.
Thanks to all my Facebook friends and friends of friends for the great Road Trip suggestions. West coast, here we come!
