Gardant's Growth Continues in Indiana
Gardant's presence in Indiana continued to grow with the opening of Glasswater Creek of Plainfield earlier this month. The Gardant-managed affordable assisted living community features 131 studio and one-bedroom apartments for older adults who need some help to maintain their independence.

The community was developed by and is a property of the Community Reinvestment Foundation (CRF). The foundation, which is based in Indianapolis, is dedicated to investing in housing and reinvesting in individuals, families and communities.

Located in Indianapolis, Glasswater Creek of Plainfield is exclusively designed to serve low-income older adults.

With the opening of Glasswater Creek of Plainfield, Gardant now manages 11 assisted living communities in Indiana.

Affordable assisted living communities to be managed by Gardant are under construction in Columbus, Fort Wayne, Mishawaka and Newburgh, Indiana.

National Administrator of the Year and Quality Award Recipients
The American Health Care Association/National Center for Assisted Living honored Jacklyn O'Keefe as the 2019 national Assisted Living Administrator of the Year award during its annual conference in Orlando in October. Jacklyn is Administrator of Heritage Woods of Rockford, a Gardant-managed affordable assisted living community in Illinois.

Also during the conference, Heritage Woods of Rockford and the John Evans Supportive Living community in Pekin, Illinois received Bronze Quality awards. The AHCA/NCAL awards program is based on the core values and criteria of the Baldridge Performance Excellence program.

Polar Coaster Weather Predictions
Some weather prognosticators are predicting the possibility of Polar Coaster weather this winter, at least for the Midwest. The forecast is for periods of milder than normal temperatures with the possibility of the Polar Vortex and accompanying frigid Artic air bursting onto the scene. The Farmer's Almanac predicts a freezing, frigid and frosty winter for two-thirds of the country.

Cold weather can cause hypothermia, and older adults are among those most vulnerable.

A recent Gardant Blog features tips from the National Institute on Aging and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on coping with winter weather.

Five Ways to Make the Holiday Season More Magical
Meghann Giarraputo, Gardant's Director of Memory Care, highlights five ways to make the holiday season more magical for an older adult loved one.

Playing Games and Brain Health
Playing games is good for mental health, especially among older adults. Research indicates that playing cards, board games and video games helps keep our minds sharp and agile and may stave off cognitive decline, notes a story recently posted on the Medical News Today website.

The Shapes of Parks and Mortality Rates
Another story recently posted on the Medical News Today website notes the importance of green space for longevity. It cites new research that indicates that the more irregular and complex the shape of green space such as parks is, the lower the mortality rate is.

Balancing Safety with Independence, Personal Choice and Dignity
In a recent Gardant Blog, Rick Banas of Gardant takes issue with some of the comments in an opinion piece about aging that was posted on the New York Times website.

You Have the Power
The National Council on Aging (NCOA) notes that falls are the leading cause of fatal injury and non-fatal trauma-related hospital admissions among older adults. Falling can be costly financially and lead to a loss of independence.

The good news, according to NCOA, is that falling is not an inevitable part of aging. Most falls are preventable. A recent Gardant Blog highlights steps that NCOA recommends older adults take to reduce the risk of falling.

Tips from HealthDay on what to do if you fall are posted on the U.S. News and World Report website.

The Importance of Regular Exercise
Regular exercise can lower the risk of heart disease and stroke, says a story by HealthDay reporter Robert Preidt that was posted on the U.S. News and World Report website. The story indicates that being more physically active is especially important for individuals with disabilities or chronic health conditions.

Improving Recall
A video posted on the NBC News BETTER website highlights five things we can all do to improve our recall.

Top Ten Financial Scams Targeting Older Adults
The National Council on Aging details the top financial scams targeting older adults. They include Medicare and health insurance scams; counterfeit prescription drugs; and fraudulent anti-aging products.

Gardant Has Moved
Earlier this year, Gardant moved to new office space. We are still in the Kankakee, Illinois, area, but our address and zip code have changed from 535 E. North St. in Bradley, IL 60915 to 4882 Convent St. in Bourbonnais, IL 60914. The larger office space better accommodates our needs as our portfolio of senior living, assisted living and memory care continues to expand.

2019 SHINING STAR AWARD RECIPIENTS
Earlier this month, Gardant Management Solutions honored Shining Stars from each Gardant-managed community during a special Shining Star Awards Luncheon. Gardant-managed communities shine brighter because of their commitment to ensuring residents receive the Love, Compassion and Dignity they deserve in addition to the help and assistance they need.

Selected as the Top Three Shining Stars for 2019 were (from left) Estela Rodriguez of Heritage Woods of Ottawa, IL; Beth Squires of John Evans Supportive Living in Pekin, IL; and Karoline Sandstorm of Heritage Woods of Noblesville, IN.
