Healthy Relationships at Home and at the Workplace
By: Caryn Horn, LCMFT

Our lives are made up of relationships, whether we are referring to the relationship we have with ourselves, with our work, with our family, our partner, our friends or our children. Poor quality of relationships and lack of social supports both increase the risk for depression. Think about it. What is your mood like when your relationships are not going as well as you would like? Think about the last few times you've been angry, hurt or upset. Was it about the relationship you have with yourself, with your partner, your child, your family, friends, etc.?

Whether in a workplace, at home, or elsewhere, in order to have successful and healthy relationships, all parties must do their part. Here are some things you can do to begin this process:
 Listen without judgment
 Empathize and validate the other person's experience
 Communicate using "I" statements
 Express appreciation and gratitude
 Give genuine compliments
 Eliminate blame from your repertoire
 Take accountability and increase your self awareness
 Practice self-care/work-life balance
 Learn to trust yourself and others
 Demonstrate that you are trustworthy to others by following through, being consistent between your words and actions, using direct yet respectful communication
 Give eye contact and smile
 Be present in the moment
 Try to always find a positive in intention
