Corinne Costin Gibson Memorial Public Library Community Garden and Memorial Sculpture
|
A group of "Master Gardeners" from the Gulf County UF/IFAS Extension Office worked together this summer to revitalize a demonstration garden that was damaged during Hurricane Michael. Demonstration gardens, sometimes referred to as learning landscapes or teaching gardens, are a collection of plants assembled and organized in a manner that allows garden visitors to access and study them. Demonstration gardens are designed with a particular focus and include plants that support the educational theme of the garden. The garden at the Corinne Costin Gibson Memorial Public Library demonstrates a "Florida-Friendly" landscape, filled with native, heat and drought-tolerant plants and wildflowers attractive to pollinators. Of particular interest to library visitors is the large expanse of native passionflower vine (or "Maypop"), the host plant for the Gulf Fritillary and several other species of butterflies. Library visitors are treated not only to the sweet scent and exotic display of the flowers, but to clouds of orange and black Gulf Fritillaries and hundreds of very hungry caterpillars. The cost of the improvements was made possible by a donation from a generous library patron.
After installation of the garden was complete, members of Boy Scout troop 0347 worked to install a sea turtle sculpture in the garden. The sculpture, which was designed and built by local craftsmen at Monumental Fabrication of America, will be dedicated to the memory of Paula Boyett Boone. Ms. Boone was a beloved member of the library's staff who died in 2019 after a twenty year career with the library, where she led literacy programs for both adults and children. Her friends at the Gulf and East Bay Turtle Patrol selected the sculpture to recognize her contributions to sea turtle conservation in Gulf County; Ms. Boone and her friend Barbara Eells organized the County's first sea turtle patrol in 1990, surveying an area from St. Joe Beach to Cape San Blas and Indian Pass. The sculpture was painted by her friend and fellow librarian, Joanne Whitley, with designs reflecting Ms. Boone's many interests and contributions to the community she loved, including her work as a genealogist and Registrar with the St. Joseph's Bay Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and her interest in animal rescue and rehabilitation.
You can see the demonstration garden and the sea turtle sculpture at the Corinne Costin Gibson Memorial Public Library, located at 110 Library Drive, Port St. Joe, Florida.

Old Abe: A Novel recounts the final five years of Abraham Lincoln's life, the most cataclysmic years of America's history. Bound to Lincoln's side, every page of this vivid novel details the President's struggles. We follow him as national tragedy deepens, as he struggles and presses ahead, and as he comes to life once again fighting to save the country. This story spans from the spring of 1860 in Illinois, to Lincoln's election and the calamity of the Civil War, to his assassination at the height of his power.

In Dublin, 1918: Ravaged by war and disease, Nurse Julia Power works at an understaffed hospital in the city center, where expectant mothers who have come down with the terrible new Flu are quarantined together. Into Julia's regimented world step two outsiders — Doctor Kathleen Lynn, a rumored Rebel on the run from the police, and a young volunteer helper, Bridie Sweeney. In the darkness and intensity of this tiny ward, over three days, these women change each other's lives in unexpected ways.

by Stephanie Winston Wolkoff
The former director of special events at Vogue, Stephanie Winston Wolkoff met Melania Knauss in 2003. As their friendship deepened over lunches at Manhattan hot spots, black-tie parties, and giggle sessions in the penthouse at Trump Tower, Wolkoff watched the Mrs. Trump raise Barron and manage her highly scrutinized marriage. After Trump won the 2016 election, Wolkoff became the First Lady's trusted advisor in charge of hiring staff, organizing events, helping write speeches, and creating Malania's debut initiatives. It all fell apart when she was made the scapegoat for inauguration finance irregularities, which nearly destroyed Wolkoff.
