Outgoing President's Message

Time has flown! It seems we were just planning our next 5 years and now a year has passed. The foundations for AIA Dayton’s future have been laid over the last year. We have sunset programs such as the EP picnic and the Architrave and are developing replacements for them, such as a new EP mentoring program and a stronger social media presence.

We achieved greater public outreach and inclusion with a photography award in our Focus on Design Awards and our Roundtable with Mayor Whaley. Next year we look to sponsor PK Night and have AIA members presenting.

We took a long hard look at our finances and made some difficult decisions. It had been at least 20 years since the sponsorship levels had been set. Inflation had killed their value. We are adjusting them over the next 2 years to bring them up to date. We made other changes as well, requiring CEU providers to be sponsors or Professional Affiliate members, and providing a sponsor and CEU at next year’s annual meeting.

The 2020 convention committee asked itself why with all the options out there would anyone want to come to convention? The answer: For the experience! We are going to provide an experience you can’t get at a lunch and learn or a webinar. We are planning walking tours and small group dinning excursions of our great city of Dayton. We are going to show it off to our peers in September 2020 at the AIA Ohio Convention!

We have laid the foundations for the next few years. I look forward to helping to build the rest of AIA Dayton’s future!

To you and yours I wish you a Merry/Happy/Joyous/Honorable…

Women in Architecture

AIA Cleveland is proud to realize the OHIO: SAY IT LOUD exhibit, which will open on March 12, 2020 at Karamu House as part of our annual Women in Architecture celebration. The exhibit will travel across the state and will feature projects by diverse design professionals, as well as quotes and video interviews of their experiences in the architecture and design field. SAY IT LOUD is the activation of a national movement of sharing, protecting and celebrating the journey of the underrepresented to inspire the next generation.

If you are interested in participating, please complete the call for content so that your work can be selected to be part of the exhibit. You are also encouraged to share the call for content with your network of women and diverse designers.

Support Your Profession through Contributions to the Architects PAC

On November 7, HB402  was introduced which would create a licensing board for interior designers in Ohio. While architects in Ohio work closely with interior designers, most agree that adding licensure to the practice of interior design is not necessary and does not work to serve the health, safety or welfare of the public. AIA Ohio will oppose this legislation and our Advocacy Task Force has set a plan of action to do so.

How can you be involved?  We need to build up the coffers of the AIA Ohio PAC. AIA Ohio has been very active supporting legislation that serves the practice of architecture, and the Ohio Architects' PAC is our best tool for this. Donate today, by clicking here.

There are over 2,100 members in AIA Ohio. A $10 contribution from each member would make a tremendous impact. If architects want to have a say in policies that affect the profession, we need to elevate our voice. Do your part by contributing to the AIA Ohio PAC.

Alphabet’s Sidewalk Labs just unveiled a software that designs whole neighborhoods

When it comes to designing a neighborhood, you might say it takes a village. Urban planners, architects, developers, and city officials all have to work together to create a space that will serve its community best. And all of these stakeholders generally mean increased time, cost, and a fragmented process that leaves constituents to wonder, “what actually is the best option available?”

To Support The Relentless Growth Of Tokyo, These Architects Look To Space Capsules And Living Creatures

When the Nakagin Capsule Tower arrived on the Tokyo skyline in 1972, humans had been traveling to space for more than a decade. The rockets developed by the Soviet Union and the United States were not only powerful projectiles, but also minimal habitats, sustaining their passengers in the smallest survivable space.
