Independent Bookstore Day marks its third year of celebrating independent bookstores nationwide on
Saturday, April 29, with literary parties around the country, including at Weller Book Works. In addition to the ever-popular
I.B.D. merchandise (
Night Vale vinyl anyone?) that is available only in-store on Independent Bookstore Day, we've got a slate of fun events planned.
Celebrity Book Face: What do KRCL's Lara Jones and InterNet Properties' Vasilios Priskos have in common? They're readers, of course! Successfully match pics of well-known locals with pics of their favorite books and be eligible to win a $50 gift certificate.
Blind Date with a Book: Before I.B.D. (April 2 - 27) bring a book you'd like to share with another reader and leave it with us along with three descriptors. We'll wrap it in brown paper and write those words on the outside. On I.B.D. visit the romantic blind date table and pick your next potentially great literary love.
Open Mic: Read a passage on the mezzanine from your favorite book.
Readers' Virtual Photo Gallery: Take a pic of yourself with a favorite book in our store and post it to one of your social media accounts. Tag #bookstoreday and #wellerbookworks, show it to a WBW bookseller and get 10% off your purchase on I.B.D.
Create Your Own Little Golden Book: Little Golden Books will be 50 this year and they're celebrating by donating kits so you can make a Little Golden Book of your very own. From 1:00 to 5:00 pm.
Stencils by Tony: Back by popular demand! Bring a piece of clothing or another item you'd like Tony to apply a bookish stencil to and he'll do so, for free! He's been cutting new stencils and will bring old favorites as well. From 1:00 to 5:00 pm.

spent his life studying and writing about art, design and the occult. Between the 1960s and the 1980s he published many books. One of his scarcest titles is his
Dictionary of Occult, Hermetic and Alchemical Sigils
, a large compendium of magical symbols collected from all periods and regions of human history. All editions of this book are scarce. As far as I can tell, at this time, we are offering the only available original British copy. It's in fine condition. $750

Lindsay Schopfer, author of the steampunk-flavored fantasy The Adventures of Keltin Moore, reads and signs Into the North. Professional monster hunter Keltin Moore is returning home to settle into his old life of being a small town hero. But when gold is discovered in the far North, he must leave again to protect the prospectors from a local gang and a legendary creature known as the Ghost of Lost Trap. Keltin and his friends will be tested to their very limits as they try to hunt their most dangerous monster yet.

Books and Bridges presents Brian Birch and his discussion "Can Faith and Reason be Reconciled". Books and Bridges is a community institute that facilitates ideas and conversation on the best of human thought. "We explore the wisdoms of the world and apply them to modern life. We have no political, religious or ideological affiliation. In a society divided by uncivil discourse, the beauty of the humanities-novels, history, philosophy, poetry, ethics and epics-lift us to our better angels." Brian Birch, philosophy professor at Utah Valley University, will lead a discussion on the age-old question posed by early Christian thinker Tertullian: "What hath Athens to do with Jerusalem?"

Blood, Bones & Butter: The Inadvertent Education of a Reluctant Chef by
Gabrielle Hamilton.
It follows an unconventional journey through the many kitchens Hamilton has inhabited through the years: the rural kitchen of her childhood, the kitchens of France, Greece, and Turkey, her own kitchen at her restaurant Prune, and the kitchen of her Italian mother-in-law, who serves as the link between Hamilton's idyllic past and her own future family.
