This week, Washington, DC, welcomed AIA leaders for the annual Grassroots conference. Centered on the theme  People. Purpose. Partnership.,  the event brought together architects and chapter leaders from across the country for engaging discussions about the value of architecture in society.

More than 600 of these individuals  converged on Capitol Hill  on Wednesday to meet with members of Congress, united by a common desire to elevate design’s role in solving some of the most pressing concerns of our time. Over the course of the conference’s opening day, architects conducted meetings with 137 members of Congress and 337 Congressional staff representing 50 states, marking the biggest day for AIA advocacy efforts in the Institute’s history.

SMALL FIRM ROUNDTABLE: 21 st  CENTURY SCHOOLS
Thursday, February 28
12:00 - 1:00 PM
Dilworth Neighborhood Grille

The big challenges that most school districts face in new construction is rising costs and meeting construction schedules in the face of labor shortages. Only to be followed by controlling operational costs through energy efficiency measures. Most school construction is dominated by traditional method of either steel stud or CMU construction but there is a third option that is gaining favor. Insulated Concrete Forms (ICF) combine 7 building elements within 1 product; installed by 1 sub-contractor, increasing construction speeds, reducing scheduling delays and mitigates performance risk of wall assembly. This presentation defines what ICF’s are, benefits offered, design recommendations and how they are constructed. Many examples of previous and current schools along with cost of construction will be shared.

BECHTLER MODERNISM + FILM SERIES: THE COMPETITION
March 21, 2019
6PM
Bechtler Museum of Modern Art

A raw account of how some of the best architects in the world, design giants like Jean Nouvel, Frank Gehry or Zaha Hadid, struggle to beat the competition for the National Museum of Art in Andorra. While nearly as old as the profession itself, architectural competitions became a social, political and cultural phenomenon of the post-Guggenheim Bilbao building bubble. Taking place at the dramatic moment in which the real estate bubble became a global crisis, this is the first competition to be documented, producing an unclassifiable piece of art that may be an intense thriller, an ethnographic report as well as a cult movie around the icons of the contemporary architecture.
