Reflecting on Gratitude this Holiday Season

In addition to celebrating the holiday season with family and friends, many legal professionals give thanks this time of year to the people who have contributed to their success. Therefore, it is an appropriate time to reflect on gratitude and its value in the legal profession.
While it may be difficult for many legal professionals to experience gratitude in their work[1], every legal professional should cultivate the trait of gratitude. As one legal scholar has observed, cultivating this attitude can be a sustaining source of inspiration to lawyers[2]. We should be grateful we have achieved a status in society in which we can improve not only our own lives, but also the lives of those we serve.
As members of the Central New York Women's Bar Association, we are particularly grateful to the women who founded our organization nearly 40 years ago.
At the recent
reception to celebrate the career and accomplishments of the Honorable Karen M. Uplinger, we were reminded how Judge Uplinger and the other founding members of CNYWBA strove to advance the status of women in the profession. On behalf of CNYWBA, we take this opportunity to thank Judge Uplinger whose successful efforts advanced the status of women in the law and have afforded us many of the professional opportunities we enjoy today.
As we celebrate the holidays this year, I hope you experience gratitude in your personal and professional life. On behalf of the CNYWBA Board, we wish you a very happy holiday season and new year!

In Memoriam
The Central New York Women's Bar Association extends its deepest sympathies to the family, friends and colleagues of the Honorable William J. Burke, who presided over the Onondaga County and Syracuse City Courts for many years.

SURVEY ON GENDER FAIRNESS IN THE COURTS
Over the next four to six weeks, a large, random sample of attorneys admitted to practice in New York State will receive a survey from Chief Judge Janet DiFiore. The survey seeks practitioners' insights on gender fairness in the New York State Courts. It has been 32 years since the New York Task Force on Women in the Courts issued a report on gender bias. That report found pervasive gender bias in our court system with "grave consequences that denied women equal justice, equal treatment and equal opportunity." The current poll will gauge what progress has been made toward eliminating gender disparities and what continued- or new-corrective action is necessary.
The survey, which will take approximately 20 minutes to complete, addresses the experiences of attorneys and court users, asking participants if and how gender affects courtroom interactions, the courthouse environment and free-generating appointments and assignments.
The Central New York Women's Bar Association encourages the participation of its members selected to complete the survey.

Members Sought for Access to Justice Committee
The Honorable James C. Tormey recently announced that the Fifth Judicial District will be implementing an Access to Justice Initiative in Onondaga County in 2019. The goal of this Initiative is to develop a strategic plan to provide effective assistance for all low-income individuals in Onondaga County who are confronted with a significant civil legal matter. As an initial step in the process, the District is forming a leadership group to assist in developing the plan, identifying community needs, establishing priorities and creating a sustainable program. If you are aware of any key legal or community stakeholders that you would recommend for the Committee, please forward the names and contact information of the suggested individuals to [email protected] by January 3, 2019.

CALL FOR WBASNY OFFICER NOMINATIONS
(and Notice of Submission Requirements)
As a member of the Central New York Women's Bar Association, you are a member of the statewide women's bar association, the Women's Bar Association of the State of New York. The WBASNY Nominations Committee is looking for "a few good members" interested in serving in officer positions of WBASNY for the 2019-2020 term.
Please consider offering your time and talents to our statewide bar association or suggesting other active members of CNYWBA to submit their name for a position. While providing WBASNY with continued good leadership, an officer position offers exciting new experiences, the ability to build leadership skills, and the opportunity to expand your professional network.
Candidates are required to submit an application form, resume, and supporting letter from the candidate's chapter president by January 4, 2019 at 4:00 pm. The application can be found on WBASNY's website

The following materials must be attached to your application:
- A current resume including all educational institutions that you have attended and your employment history since graduation from law school.
- A letter of reference from your Chapter President supporting your nomination and providing specific information regarding your suitability for a position on the WBASNY Executive Board.
- A personal statement addressed to the Nominations Committee Co-chairs detailing your past contributions to your Chapter, WBASNY and the legal profession. You should also include a statement regarding your interest in the position(s) applied for and the personal characteristics you possess which will assist the committee in assessing your qualifications for the WBASNY Executive Board.
- NO OTHER MATERIALS WILL BE CONSIDERED.
Interviews of the candidates will take place the morning of the WBASNY Board meeting on January 26, 2019. Officer positions open are: President-Elect, Vice President (3 positions), Treasurer, Corresponding Secretary and Recording Secretary.
Candidates' application materials must be dated by January 4, 2019 at 4:00 pm.
