Yurok, Karuk, and Hupa Basket Weavers Maggie Peters + Nelia Marshall

Last week on Shelter Together we featured Humboldt County basket weavers Maggie Peters (Yurok) and Nelia Marshall (Hupa). Mentor artist Maggie and apprentice Nelia shared about their Apprenticeship work together in the Yurok, Karuk, and Hupa cultural practice of making traditional baby baskets. They touched on everything from the process of preparing hazel and spruce root for weaving baskets, to the impacts of colonization, climate change, and COVID-19 on indigenous practices within their communities, as well as the creativity and improvisation required to sustain these practices.
