LENTEN STUDY LED BY PASTOR DEB
"Short Stories By Jesus: The Enigmatic Parables of a Controversial Rabbi"
Mondays beginning March 11 for 6 weeks
When: 12:00-1:00 p.m. Brown Bag Lunch Study  OR
7:00-8:00 p.m. Evening Study

Minimum 6 people registered in the class time slot for it to be held. Register in the narthex or church office.
Based on the best-selling book of the same name by Professor Amy Jill Levine of Vanderbilt University. Professor Levine provides a short video to lead off each session. As for the content, Jesus was a skilled storyteller and perceptive teacher who used parables from everyday life to effectively convey his message and meaning. We will go back in time to understand how the original Jewish audience understood certain parables and how they also challenge us today. COST: $10.00 for study guide collected at first session.

GUATEMALA ENGLISH CAMP - VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
JUNE 28 - JULY 7, 2019

COTH is very thankful and excited about the 13 volunteers they have so far (including 3 adults from UMCE with two granddaughters).   However, they are hoping and praying for more volunteers so that they can add a new group of students for this year. You can still sign-up for this wonderful, amazing mission trip with Pura Vida Ministries:   https://www.puravida.org/trip.html?trip_id=75. Volunteers pay their own way, but you can also help by donating to Pura Vida towards a volunteer's trip. If you have any questions, please contact Michael Eaton (303-669-0063) or Joanna Cook (303-588-4137). The English Camp grew out of Church of the Hills and COTH is still considered the sponsor of this great program, but it is exciting to see this become an inter-church mission trip! Your prayers are vital to this work!

BLESSING BAG SUPPLIES NEEDED!

The Missions Committee is seeking travel-sized  shampoos/conditioners/lotions to use in Blessing Bags.  If you're traveling, bringing home your unused hotel supplies would be great.  We'll soon have a fresh supply of Blessing Bags ready for you to leave in your car, and when you see someone in need at a stoplight, giving them a bag brings joy to them...and you.  Donations of supplies all kinds are always welcomed.   Thank you for your support!

LUNCH BUNCH IS ON THE MOVE!

Lunch bunch is on the move and looking for our next place to gather & enjoy each other's company!   Do you have a favorite dining spot in town or surrounding area? Not looking for anything fancy, just good food company.   Contact Marcia Loomis at 303-898-3748 text/call or [email protected] or drop your suggestion in the Fellowship Hall box next to the info board.

FOOTLOOSE & FANCY-FREE FUN!

Yes!  Back by popular demand!  Footloose & Fancy-Free Fun

If you've been involved with this group of mostly retirees in the past, (but we'll let you go if you're not quite there yet) then you know how much fun, food & fellowship we have had! If you've not heard of some of our adventures of the past, check the Fellowship Hall info board.   We make plans for a day out, a weekend, and even a week in the past. We always have a good time together. If you have a place or adventure that you would like to do, just put it out there and we'll see how many we can get to participate and then JUST DO IT! It's very informal, go on the adventures you like or pass for another one.

We welcome ideas from everyone for a fun time someplace. Don't hesitate to put out your ideas and then be ready to join in the fun and get to know that person that sits "on the other side" by more than a handshake on Sundays!

Don't Panic--This group does not have meetings ! (unless we need one for special event plans) ALL EVENTS ARE FUN AND OPTIONAL! HOPE TO SEE YOU THERE!   WE CAN CARPOOL & OR USE THE UMCE VAN!

The following is just some of the ideas of places to visit & learn about. Even if you've been to some of these before, it's fun to go with a group.

Denver Zoo, Hammond's Candies, Hudson Gardens, US Denver Mint, Art Galleries, Museums, State Capital, Brewery tours, Wildlife Sanctuary, Trains: summer adventure or fall color-Tourist Trains in Colorado, Tours of the Sports Facilities, Coors, Mile High, Pepsi Center, Attend a Rockies or sports game, Mesa Verde, Four Corners, Group Jeep tour of Garden of the Gods, Colorado National Monument, Western Slope, Scenic drives with historic stops, Santa Fe, NM week-end arts & crafts fests.

FLEA MARKET & CAR SHOW FUNDRAISER

Where will you take those treasures you are willing to part with?  How will you get those crafts out you'd like to sell?  While there are many opportunities in our area, consider holding some of them for the Flea Market & Car Show Fundraiser the Finance Fundraising Team is working on for this July.  If you know of others who might like to have a table at the event or who have a car-show-worthy car, please give them a "heads up".  More details to follow.  For questions contact Vickie Borden, Marcia Loomis or Karen Morales.

NEW CHAPLAIN POSITION FOR REV. TODD EVERHART
IN FLORIDA

Rev. Todd Everhart, former pastor of our church, is serving as a chaplain at the VA Hospital in Tampa, Florida as of the beginning of January.  He is the chaplain of long-term care, hospice and rehab.  He shares that he is really liking his new ministry.  Wife, Pam, will be joining him from Texas in the summer and is looking forward to serving a UM church in the area.

~ IMPORTANT NOTE FROM TRUSTEES ~

Penn Gildersleeve, Chair of UMCE's Trustees, is asking that everyone who uses the church building be aware that Penn is the point of contact for after-hours access to the church building and the rooms within the building.

Please do not contact pastor Deb, the church office manager, or the custodians if you need access. Penn is the sole contact for these types of needs/requests. If Penn is away on vacation or business he will designate someone to be his contact in his absence.

Penn's cell phone is (303) 902-9959 and his land line is (303) 674-4899.  He can be to the church in a couple of minutes.

Just a reminder that there is an updated church directory next to the phone in the church kitchen with Penn's numbers. Thank you for your understanding.

CONDOLENCES
We invite prayers of sympathy and support for Pat Webers on the passing of her mother, Rosemary Brown, age 99, who was living in Tennessee.

Science and religion are two different ways in which we deal with reality. We will discuss how both obtain knowledge and understanding of that reality. As well as what assumptions they make and their objectives.  We need both to maintain healthy physical and spiritual lives.

MINISTRY JOTTINGS BY PASTOR DEB

Lent Begins

"Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions." -- Psalm 51:1

"You are dust, and to dust you will return." This ancient formula was heard by millions of Christian all over the world two days ago on Ash Wednesday as the sign of the cross was made in ashes on their forehead or wrist. This symbolic act is both a solemn reminder and an invitation to renewal.

One temptation in Lent is to be so impressed by our sins and failings, and so overwhelmed by our lack of generosity, that we get stuck in a paralyzing guilt - a guilt that leads only to introspection instead of directing our eyes to God. It is a guilt that can become an idol and a form of false pride.

But Lent is precisely the time to break down this idol and to direct our attention to our loving Lord. The question is: "Are we like Judas, who was so overcome by his sin that he could not believe in God's mercy any longer and hung himself? Or, are we like Peter, who after denying Jesus returned to his Lord with repentance and went on to live as a truly dedicated Apostle and leader in the early church?

Prayer: Lord God, this Lent help me to do my best to keep my mind fixed on You and Your Kingdom. Amen.

Blessings,

Pastor Deb Olenyik
