Long Beach City College Alumni Newsletter
February 2018
Message from the Assistant Director,
Alumni Development

Dear Alumni,

"Treasure your relationships, not your possessions." - Anthony J. D'Angelo

I love this quote.  I truly feel that those we interact with in our lives make a lasting impression on us, whether it is in kindergarten creating those first bonds with classmates turned lifelong friends, or at LBCC when we are working towards a goal of reaching that degree.  The relationships we form with instructors that make a lasting impression on us, as well as fellow students and faculty make an impact on who we become.

February is a month that celebrates love, but I also feel that it celebrates relationships of all kinds.  I see the LBCC Alumni as a collection of relationships and my goal is to reconnect as many as possible!  Please consider joining or renewing your membership with the Alumni Association and strengthen those LBCC lifelong relationships.

Warmly,

Jennifer Bourgeois

LBCC Sweetheart Charlotte Penn.
Will you be our Sweetheart?

What is a LBCC Sweetheart?  In 1960, the members of THOR selected a "Thor Sweetheart" from the coeds at LBCC.  This difficult task was originated and fulfilled by the members of Thor.  The first "Sweetheart," picked for her "winning personality and charm" and who received her own Thor Sweetheart Pin, was Charlotte Penn.

Over time the term "Sweetheart" grew to a group of individuals or "sisters" of THOR.  Today we have several women who are selected as current sweethearts and change each semester.

Some of today's Sweethearts.

Established in 1927 at Long Beach City College, the order of THOR has transitioned from a men's honor society to a men's social service organization in 1955.

Alumni Couple Spotlight:

In 1972, students Shannon McHale from Malibu and Steven Phillips from Long Beach would meet and subsequently end up spending many years happily married.  Shannon joined the Ramayana sorority and Steven became a member of the Vidar fraternity.  They first met on October 5, 1972 at the sorority kidnap night. They had their first date two days later at the "Joint Presents" where all the girls who made it into the sororities were presented in the LBCC cafeteria.

Shannon studied Theatre Arts and Steven graduated in 1974 with his AA degree.  He went on to California State University Long Beach where he earned his degree in Criminal Justice in 1976.  He then went on to Western State Law School in Fullerton, CA.  They moved to Ventura in 1985, where Steven served as Assistant District Attorney until retirement in 2016.

Shannon and Steven are a true love story.  They were married 5 years after they first met here at LBCC on December 10, 1977 and just recently celebrated their 40th Anniversary.  They have two children and 2 grandchildren.
