NCCAP AmeriCorps Members and NCCAP AmeriCorps Program Awarded the Herb Kohl Helping Hand Award

Pictured left to right are:  MiKayla King, Julie Sadler Steve Frodl, NCCAP AmeriCorps program director and Kao Yer Thao

Three North Central Community Action Program ( NCCAP) AmeriCorps members, MiKayla King, Julie Sadler and Kao Yer Thao along with NCCAP AmeriCorps program were presented the Herb Kohl Helping Hand Award during the Legacy VIP Dinner.  The Award "recognizes an organization or individual that has demonstrated leadership and commitment to addressing the needs of low-income people."   The AmeriCorps members created the "Blue Bin Project". A blue bin was filled with small colorful bags of assorted, child-friendly trinkets, personal hygiene products, and age-appropriate books that are  offered to children of low-income families who come to the NCCAP Wausau office, seeking housing assistance. It is a caring gesture to instill hope in the child's life during trying times. We are proud of their effort in making a difference in our community with a small yet significantly profound gesture.
9/11 National Day of Service:  Dane County PASS AmeriCorps Members Clean Up Lake Menodota Shoreline After Historic Flooding

Dane County Partner's for After School Success (PASS) AmeriCorps members worked with  Dane County Park Service cleaning the Lake Mendota breakwater and shoreline in Tenney Park, Madison, WI.  AmeriCorps members worked for over two hours cleaning up lake weed, trash, etc left by the flood waters.

Rhea Stangel-Maier, Volunteer Coordinator stated:   On behalf of Dane County Parks and our Dane County community we would like to thank PASS AmeriCorps for doing your 9/11 Service Day project with us at Tenney Locks and Park.  Your crew members were a pleasure to work with and the park looks great after your members tackled various projects. Best wishes on new year for this  new "can do" group.  Keep us in mind if you need any other volunteer opportunities.

The AmeriCorps members also took a moment of silence in remembrance of the 9/11 victims and shared their 9/11 experiences.   Several members in our circle shared being 5 years old, recalling teachers turning on televisions in their classroom to watch what was going on. One member witnessed the second plane hitting the south tower.  It was a powerful day of service and reflection for all who participated.
