The Arthur and Elizabeth Schlesinger Library on the History of Women in America at Harvard's Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study has built a massive digital archive of the #metoo movement, beginning in 2017, when the hashtag exploded in popularity across the Internet. The growing collection currently contains over 32 million tweets referencing #metoo and dozens of related hashtags, as well as 1,100 web sites and thousands of news articles.

 

This special one-time grant opportunity, a joint initiative of HDSI and the Schlesinger Library, seeks to seed research and teaching projects using the datasets. This joint initiative seeks to catalyze the innovative, interdisciplinary scholarship bridging data science, gender studies, and history, among other disciplines. Applications from faculty who would be interested in using the collection in their teaching would be especially welcome. Researchers could use the datasets to analyze how online social movements spread both in the United States and globally, the kind of topics discussed on social media, and the influence of certain kinds of participants in that realm. Projects using these data to analyze the participation and portrayal of women and other gender minorities in social media is of particular interest. Proposals which will seek to pilot new methodologies for analyzing massive digital corpora are also welcome. These are examples only, and applicants are encouraged to think broadly.
