TranStar Rolls Out Enhanced Flood Warning System for Roads in Preparation for This Year's Hurricane Season

Houston TranStar will show real-time traffic data with potential trouble
spots for roadway flooding.

Anticipating an active year ahead for storms in the Atlantic, Houston TranStar reminds residents to prepare for the 2020 Hurricane Season by downloading its mobile app, a tool that shows real-time traffic data and estimates areas of roadway flooding risk during heavy rainfall.

Developed in partnership with the Harris County Flood Control District and the Texas A&M Transportation Institute after Hurricane Harvey, TranStar's Roadway Flood Warning System displays real-time data from 283 weather sensors, an increase of 76 sensors from 2019.

Global Experiences Shaped Officer's Career Track

Officer Ana Bertens makes a stop at one of her favorite Westchase District Patrol check ins, the Houston Marriott Westchase.

You could say Ana Bertens was worlds away before joining the Houston Police Department. Her unlikely path to law enforcement came while she traveled back and forth to live between two continents: North America and South America. Born in Santiago, Chile, Bertens' parents brought her and her siblings to the United States in the 1990s where she spent half of her life between Florida and Houston.

After turning 20, she moved back to Chile where she spent seven years working as a producer for a children's TV show and on music videos. Bertens met her future spouse in Chile and the two got married, deciding to begin their life together in the U.S. Read More

WHAM Transitions to Relief Agency, Extends Food Distribution into August

Don McKinney, vice president of public safety for Westchase District, lends a volunteer hand to WHAM's weekly food distribution which is extended through August.

The hardship caused by COVID has not eased but neither has the dedication to the community by West Houston Assistance Ministries (WHAM). The organization remains determined and committed to doing all it can to meet the increased need. WHAM recently announced that it will continue to distribute food to 150 cars per day on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays beginning at 9:30 a.m.

In the more than four months of being on a disaster relief footing, WHAM has provided food for 68,504 individuals including 27,034 children. Also in the past week, the organization distributed $65,068.91 in financial assistance to those affected by the pandemic. Read More

Farmtastic Is Tomorrow: Festivities Include
Caricature Artist, Pickle Making & Miniature Ponies

Farmtastic returns to the Westchase District Farmers Market tomorrow. From 4 - 6 p.m., you can bring the kids to enjoy free Farmtastic festivities including a caricature artist (the world's original selfie!) and mini ponies from A Place for Peanut. For a nominal fee you can also make your own pickles at the PEAS Farm tent.

Pickle Making
As part of Farmtastic, PEAS Farm will show market goers how to make
their own pickles.
In addition to Farmtastic, it's National Farmers Market Week which is a good time to show your support for the farmers market.

Presented by the Farmers Market Coalition, National Farmers Market Week celebrates the tireless efforts of our market operators and vendors who show why the farmers market is essential. The Westchase District Farmers Market exemplifies this role in our community.

According to the Farmers Market Coalition, this year's week celebrates resiliency. Like farmers markets around the country, the Westchase District Farmers Market has adapted to the community's needs and remained open during the COVID-19 crisis.

Check out recent stories in the Houston Chronicle and Houstonia about how our market responded to the crisis.
