A Letter from President Bernhardt

Dear St. Andrews Community,
This was an unusually busy summer. Our faculty prepared during the summer to deliver classes in various formats: in seat, hybrid, remote, or online knowing they could have students in their classes from international countries unable to reach the United States, students in quarantine because of COVID-19, and students in seat with masks on and social distancing. There was a focus on using technology to flip the classroom: exposing students to new concepts before class and then using the classroom for deeper, higher work of analyzing and applying the concepts. There were new faculty joining established faculty to prepare for the 12 new undergraduate programs and one new graduate program St. Andrews has developed in the past two years. Our admissions, financial aid, business office, housing, coaches and athletic trainers, information technology team, registrars, and academic faculty joined to produce 2-3 virtual events each week for new students, returning students, and parents.
The athletic and equestrian coaches prepared for our athletes and equestrians in light of COVID-19. Our Student Life leaders prepared for alternative activities to provide safe, small, social gatherings for our students. Our Quality Education Program (QEP) which focuses on ethical decision making gave voice and understanding to the Black Lives Matter movement through education and group conversation. A COVID-19 task force planned protocols, made essential COVID-19 PPE purchases, and provided COVID-19 training to all faculty, staff, and students.
Amid all the preparation and change, some very important foundational concepts stayed the same and were our guiding beacon. Our mission did not change. Our core values did not change. Our SAGE and general education foundation did not change. Our goal to provide each student with a customized college experience did not change. Our belief that St. Andrews provides a transformational education for students, developing them intellectually, physically, emotionally, and socially, so that they discover their purpose and develop and use their voice for themselves, their community, and the world did not change.
And then it was time: August 25th marked the beginning of the 2020 fall semester. COVID-19 would not be an excuse to lower our standards or our commitment to each student.
