The story of Jesus’ tempted in the wilderness for 40 days is a strange story for our modern ears. Can someone really fast for 40 days? Is there a devil and does he present himself in these ways? How does this story speak to our modern, affluent, and educated ears of today?
Jesus is 30 years old. He has just been baptized by his radical cousin, John. Despite John’s protest that Jesus does not need to be baptized, Jesus insists, refusing special treatment and joins us all in a sinner’s baptism.
God likes this, sends a dove and verbally announces His approval.
Then Jesus goes to the desert for 40 days. It is a time to fast, to pray, and consider what he has got himself into and what it will take to accomplish it. It’s clear there will be great resistance all the way. He is on the brink of a three-year astonishing, world changing ministry, and before he can pour himself out for others, he must consider the demons he must face.
Jesus experiences three temptations, each more intense than the last. Three times Jesus deflects those temptation by properly interpreting scripture—by responding with truth against lies. He has been reading, pondering and discussing scriptures since before age 12. Now Jesus draws on those years of learning in his time of need. He is able to reject comfort, security and control as motivators for his life. Instead he will embrace risk, vulnerability and suffering for a cause much larger than himself. He will trust in God alone and in doing so will save your life and mine and the whole world!
Our practice of lent each year is to mimic this journey of Jesus and consider what we will value, what we will listen to, and how we will live. In these 40 days of Lent, may we each confront our own temptations to pursue comfort, security and control and all the ways they seek to pull us from God. May we also draw on scripture, prayer and devotion for the strength we need for the ongoing journey, as we seek to follow Jesus more faithfully and trust God more fully.

As Epiphany Fades...Snow lingers,
and the Lenten Season is Here.
Did you ever give up something for Lent? We perhaps caught the idea from our Catholic friends, and now it's a set time for a diet, or maybe something easier. The lady who tells how to “tidy up” in a book or on video is so popular right now. Going through closets and drawers, finding things that may not fit, or would be better given to someone who can use them. Not easy to do...Way too many choices all of a sudden! We're supposed to ask if the article gives us pleasure... then decide.
I have another thought about “giving up” something for Lent. Do you remember the song by Professor Henry Higgins in the now old, “My Fair Lady?” He's telling about how women worry so about their hair, and says
“Straightening up their hair is all they ever do... Why don't they straighten up the 'mess' that's inside?”
Personally, I could use a bit of straightening “inside” for sure. Lent for Lutherans is a time to take a look “inside” our hearts and souls, perhaps giving up a harmful habit or something nagging to be fixed: maybe a grudge against someone or something as small as calling a friend you promised to keep in touch with, but never did.
A few years ago when Sudoku appeared in the Strib [Star Tribune newspaper], I got so hung up on the daily puzzle! It would take way too much time...wasted time. Giving it up for several weeks was easy... just take a pen and cross it out. Giving up Sudoku for Lent did not straighten out any “mess that's inside” but was symbolic of how we waste time every day.
Can we all think of changes we might try? Right away griping about the long winter comes to mind, and it's not going to help spring arrive any sooner. Giving up some food.... usually one we don't like anyway, will not make us feel better, just self-righteous! What to do? Everyone has their own “mess” that's inside, so time for some soul-searching is here. Trying your best is always a good start, and asking for God's help is better.

-By Roy Shemanek
This month the Thursday Workmen celebrated fifteen years of service to TLC. We began as a volunteer group of capable workers to complete the unfinished parts of TLC's new addition in 2004. Since then we have evolved into a group that is now maintaining the building....interior and exterior.
Every Thursday at 9:00 am we meet in the Conference Room to check our agenda for the day. Church Administrator, Michelle Reber, meets with us to clarify what needs doing. The men decide who will do what, and we are fortunate to have some real experts in the group. This year a few of us have been coming on Mondays or Tuesdays to do special projects that must be completed, for instance when gardening must be done in good weather. Watering the newly planted annuals and perennials is a top priority. The regular, ongoing jobs are important, such as cleaning the carpets, vacuuming the pews and polishing the wood, plus aligning them properly using a yard stick. When visitors come we are pleased to hear compliments on how well-kept our church is maintained.
|
|
|
A problem that has been growing year by year as our church ages, are the repairs which we now find difficult to do, as in many situations, the parts to be fixed are no longer available. Some materials used in the construction are now obsolete, so some ingenuity must be used to repair them. For that reason, what used to be simple now takes longer to do. Some rather large projects need to be scheduled when finances allow. The parking lot lights are very important, and some need new poles as well. The parking lot needs repaving, and before long our roof will need replacing. Carpeting in Fellowship Hall is used so much and is wearing out. Several trees are dying and need taking down, and some tree roots are winding around the irrigation system.
Thanks to the Thursday Workmen, and to TLC, God's House for which we care!

Anyone interested in volunteering with the Thursday Workmen is encouraged to attend a Thursday morning meeting or contact Michelle Reber for more information.

Lloyd O. Grandprey
December 16, 1930 - February 27, 2019
|
|
|
-By Karen Daniels
Lloyd Grandprey died recently. This life-long trumpet player and former member of Transfiguration Lutheran Church, was one of our first Brass players. He was a happy guy, welcoming to all, and loved playing his horn. His family were active TLC Church members ... wife Betty in the Sunday School and son Tom, a tuba player with us. Through the years he played in many many community bands including the Richfield Symphonic Band. He lived to play his trumpet; how fitting that he played to his final days. Lloyd was an inspiration in growing our TLC Brass Choir and Low Brass Ensemble to what they are today.

ANSWERS FROM QUIZ EARLIER IN THIS ISSUE
1) What biblical event does the time of Lent represent?
Answer #2: JESUS RETREATED INTO THE WILDERNESS WHERE HE FASTED FOR FORTY DAYS, AND WAS TEMPTED BY THE DEVIL (Luke 4:1-2)
2) Which is the last Sunday of Lent?
Answer #3: PALM SUNDAY
3) The Romans got involved in the case regarding the Trial of Jesus because...?
Answer #1: THE JEWISH AUTHORITIES COULDN'T EXECUTE
The Sanhedrin could order arrests and maintained their own police force, but any form of capital punishment required the confirmation of the procurator, as in the case of Jesus.
4) How is ash for Ash Wednesday made?
Answer #1: BY BURNING PALMS USED DURING LAST YEAR'S PALM SUNDAY
During the Shrove Tuesday, a day before Ash Wednesday, the palms are burned and collected. Later on, they will mix the ashes with holy water and bless it. The marking of ashes is a great reminder that “we are dust and to dust we shall return, and that we are invited to conversion and to believe in the Gospel."
