Our prayers are with the Peloso family who are mourning the loss of Severino "Sev" on February 2nd. A mass will be held at Sacred Heart Church in Guelph on February 20th. The Peloso family have been tremendous supporters of the Sacred Ground campaign to retrofit Loyola House and to launch our Old-Growth Forest Project. The family has generously directed memorial donations to Loyola House.

THE SPIRITUAL EXERCISES: the Ironman of Retreats
by Greg Kennedy, SJ
Long before extreme sports there was extreme spirituality. Ignatius of Loyola, enthused by astounding feats of asceticism accomplished by early saints, took to a cave in Manresa, Spain for eight months of rigorous prayer. Out of this mystical boot-camp came his Spiritual Exercises, essentially a training manual to guide a robust soul through thirty days of intense spiritual contemplation. It was to be practised in silence and reclusion with an all-consuming commitment to follow Jesus into the unrestricted, irrepressible love of God. Within the circle of Catholic spirituality, the Spiritual Exercises could be considered the Ironman of retreats.
As it happens, my two sisters are both triple "Ironmen". Thrice have they completed the gruelling course comprised of a 3.68 km swim, followed by a 180 km bike race, and polished off with a full marathon (42.20 km). Each Ironman costs them over 13 hours of uninterrupted physical exertion, to say nothing of the many months of daily training. My elder sister claims...

LOYOLA HOUSE KITCHEN
has seen an abundance of changes since November 2017.
Many of you know that our dear Susan - long-time Kitchen Manager - took a much needed break for a few months. We're grateful that she has returned to us and that she's working less without the added role of being the manager.
We hired a few new staff; we welcome Andrew who joined the team last month; Brian, hired in October, has decided to remain with us and we're thrilled with his decision to stay on! Rose, another full time cook, just started and she brings a world of cooking passion to the kitchen at Loyola. Emily is enjoying parenthood and has decided not to return to the kitchen and so we are looking for a full-time permanent cook right now.
Lots of new faces - all full of deep love and commitment to the planet and food sustainability!
MARDEN CREEK
Greg Kennedy SJ
In winter
she grows snowed continents
above darkly shifting seas;
in the tug-of-war
of thaw and freeze
fault lines run the length of her perfection.
She is my most modest Jordan,
vested newly white,
longing for my next baptism
as soon as cold softens,
for my immersion,
for our sharing common space
a few open moments
in the history of movement.
