The Unexpected August 2020 Double Whammy
|
|
Dear White Plains Residents,
Tropical Storm Isaias arrived in White Plains with greater than forecasted force on Tuesday, August 4th. The Department of Public Works received reports of over 130 locations in the city where trees were knocked or blown down, blocking roads and taking down power lines, and leaving thousands of residents in the dark.
Together, Public Works and the White Plains Police and Fire Departments worked 24 hours a day for several days to ensure the safety of residents and to immediately start clearing and removing trees in order to open up roads and to allow Con Edison to perform power restoration work.
As a result of the storm and the large quantity of debris it created, Public Works relaxed its requirements for curbside brush pickup in order to assist residents in their cleanup efforts.
|
|
Adding insult to injury, residents in many parts of the city were left without water pressure on August 10th when the City suffered a major water main break at 4 pm at the intersection of South Lexington and Martine Avenues.
This break was quickly isolated by the Department of Public Work and quick work restored water service to all residents by 8:00 PM that evening.
The 75 year old, 24” water main break created a 35 foot sinkhole, folding in the asphalt, which will require several weeks of work to repair the road.
These recent events are just one example of how our City departments work in close partnership with each other. I am thankful for this team approach to all that we do in the City and thankful for the patience of our residents during these unusual events.
Mayor Tom Roach

Last Chance to Complete the 2020 Census
|
|
We are now entering the final month for 2020 Census. The deadline to complete your census is September 30th.
If you’ve already done it – Great! The City of White Plains thanks you!
If you haven’t gotten around to it quite yet, now is the time to get it done!
What does it matter whether I complete the census, you ask? Well, it matters a lot! The results will help determine how much money we receive from Washington, D.C. over the next TEN years for important things like our schools, hospitals, housing, public works, transportation, and nutrition programs – all of which contribute to making White Plains a great place to live. And of course, the census results help determine how many representatives we get at the federal level.
Participating in the census is quick, easy, and safe. Go online at 2020Census.gov. Enter your address and follow the prompts provided on the screen.
· The online system is secure. You don’t need to worry that your personal information will be exposed or compromised. Under federal law your information cannot be shared with anyone.
· The census is available in many languages.
· You will not be asked about your citizenship status.
Thank you for helping to ensure that ALL of White Plains is counted in the 2020 census!

One BOOK, One WHITE PLAINS
|
|
Let's Talk About Antiracism
This October and November, the Library is facilitating conversations about Ibram X. Kendi's How to Be an Antiracist, which is quickly becoming an essential book for anyone who wants to go beyond an awareness of racism to the next step of contributing to the formation of a truly just and equitable society.
As part of One Book, One White Plains, we would like to join your book group to help lead the discussion, or perhaps, you can pull together a group at your job or among your friends just to discuss How to Be an Antiracist. If you are interested in having a discussion with adults, contact Kristy Bauman (kbauman@whiteplainslibrary.org.) If you are interested in a young adult group, contact Joshua Carlson jcarlson@whiteplainslibrary.org)
Save the Date: The White Plains Library Foundation, in partnership with the Thomas H. Slater Center, is presenting a special virtual event with the award-winning author, historian, and thought-leader, Ibram X. Kendi on the evening of Wednesday, October 28, 2020. This program will be the highlight of the Library’s city-wide reading initiative, One Book, One White Plains.

The 2020 General Election is Around the Corner -- Three Ways to Vote
|
|
The 2020 General Election will be held on Tuesday, November 3rd. Registered voters will be able to vote for President, their Congressperson, and State Senate and Assembly Members.
Many residents are concerned about voting due to the lingering presence of the Coronavirus in our area. It’s important to know that there are voting options available to you.
-
Mail-in Voting -- Any registered voter can request a mail-in (absentee) ballot now if they do not wish to go to a polling location because of the risk of contracting or spreading an illness. Request your ballot from the Westchester County Board of Elections website. The Board of Elections will start mailing the actual ballots in early October. Completed ballots will be counted as long as they are delivered, received by mail or postmarked by Election Day.
-
Early Voting -- For the 2020 General Election, Early In-person Voting will be held from October 24th through November 1st. Details will be available soon.
-
Regular Voting -- For the 2020 General Election you will also be able to vote at your normal polling location on Election Day as in the past.
More information can be found here.
We’ll continue to provide voting information to residents as we get closer to Election Day!
