Cypress Creek High School

With Jose Martinez, principal of Colonial HS, at this month's Lake Eola 5K & Half Marathon.
This is an abbreviated issue here on Christmas Eve to wish you and your family a wonderful Holiday Season and Winter Break. The campus will be closed until Monday, January 7, 2019 when classes resume.

I also wanted to share a very powerful result just released from the Florida Department of Education: our Class of 2018 graduation rate (table below). For this past school year Cypress Creek's graduation rate rose +2.4 percentage points to 98.8%. This is ahead of both the OCPS traditional high school graduation rate and the average high school graduation rate across the state of Florida. I am so proud of our educators and students! This amazing result reflects a tremendous amount of effort and hard work put forth by the teachers and students backed by support from home. This is a figure our entire school community should be very proud of. CONGRATULATIONS BEARS!

On behalf of the administration of Cypress Creek High School and the McHale family, Season's Greetings! I look forward to seeing everyone back on campus Monday, January 7 for a successful, on-time start to the second semester.

Monday's Motivational Moment!

GARAGES OF DESTINY

What do 10704 NE 28th St., Bellvue, Washington, 2066 Crist Dr., Los Altos, California, 4651 Kingswell Ave., Los Angeles, California, 232 Santa Margarita Ave., Menlo Park, California and 367 Addison Ave., Palo Alto, California all have in common? They are all the addresses where businesses were started in garages. Lack of funding, lack of backers, and only dreams, these addresses were the hopes of young dreamers and people with a hope for a better
tomorrow. Let's take a closer look and walk inside of these "garages of destiny."

* NE 28th Street was the home of one of the first online bookstores founded by one man in 1994. In 1995 the company sold its first book and two years later issued its IPO. Jeff Bezos founded Amazon.com, today the world's largest online retailer.

* 2066 Crist Drive housed the dream of two twenty-something nerds. In 1976 they sold their first home built computers to a local retailer. Unfortunately, the two didn't have enough money to complete the order so they took the purchase order to a parts distributor and got an advance to build their 50 computers in 30 days. Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak founded Apple Computer in that small garage, the world's most valuable technology company.

The garage at 2066 Crist Drive, Los Altos, CA

* 4651 Kingswell Ave. actually belonged to the two brother's uncle, Robert. The boys used the one car separate garage to film their first cartoon production, the Alice Comedies, which was part of the original Alice's Wonderland. Walt and Roy Disney never gave up, even through several bankruptcies to build the Disney empire, the highest grossing media conglomerate in the world.

* 367 Addison Ave. was the starting point for two engineers who had a dream of starting their own company. Their first product was an audio oscillator and one of their first customers was Walt Disney Studios. This "HP Garage" was known at the birthplace of Silicon Valley and Hewlett-Packard grew to one of the largest companies in the world. Thank you Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard for rounding up $538.00 to make your first instrument!

* 232 Santa Margarita Ave. was actually a borrowed garage of Susan Wojcicki. Larry and Sergey were two young Stanford University graduate students who had what they thought was an incredible idea of building a search engine for the Internet based on a formula they had created. Soon the project was interfering with their graduate studies so they tried to sell their idea to Incite for one million dollars.  Excite rejected the offer and now Google is the most trafficked site in the world!

How many great ideas have you had? We are all amazingly talented in some way and we all have a passion about something whether it is sports, cooking, or writing. At the five addresses above someone took action on their passion and in most cases, after numerous failures and setbacks.

Here is a quote to remember, "The distance between a great idea and turning it into a success can be traced to the length of the trail of sweat drops and tear drops."

Today is the best day to start your journey to greatness. We could add a thousand more addresses and a thousand more garages and the stories would be the same, never giving up on a dream and finding a way to the path of success.

Remember Bears . . . there is no failure in falling, the failing is not getting up after you fall and starting again.

Please remember our troops deployed overseas that will not be able to see their families this holiday season. Thank you.
