Deschutes Public Library "In the Know" Newsletter
December 26 , 2018-January 16, 2019
Our Picks for the Best of 2018
Another year, another stack of books we love! We asked Deschutes Public Library staff to share their favorite books published in 2018, and it's quite a list! There's something here for everyone--children, teens, and adults--in fiction and non-fiction as well as audio and traditional books. If you have favorite books of 2018, did you know you can create your own "best of" list to share in our library catalog? Simply log in to your account, then navigate to "Lists" in the drop-down menu at the upper right of your screen. Here's to another year of great reading!
This New Year, Resolve to Save Money with Your Library
On any given day, Deschutes Public Library customers check out more than 6,100 items. From downloads and streaming to physical items and access to databases, your library saves you money year-round. In 2019 we encourage you to try a new product or service that you haven't used before. Stream an independent film on Kanopy; download an audiobook on Hoopla; check out a stack of books on a subject that interests you; research your family tree; learn about setting up a will or trust with the law library and our legal databases; listen in on a lecture or take a class; get help with your taxes. It's all available FREE at your library, which can save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars every year. Interested in finding out just how much you can save by using your library? Big Ideas for Small Businesses
Whether you're thinking about starting a small business or have owned one for years, a good business plan is an important strategic tool. Businesses in the planning stages can use a good plan to help secure funding or investment, and established businesses can use a new or revised plan to focus on areas of potential growth and risk. Begin or refine your business plan with the help of SCORE mentors and your library. Join fellow entrepreneurs and SCORE small business mentors for "How to Write a Good Business Plan" on Jan. 16 at the D. Bend Library (register here). SCORE business counselors are also available Tuesdays, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., for free and confidential one-on-one small business counseling.
Beep Beep! Look for Us on the Road
Libraries exist beyond their walls. An important part of what we do is taking library resources and services to people who may not be able to access us otherwise. Our newly wrapped Library on the Go/Biblioteca en Camino car is easy to spot! From senior centers to schools and everywhere in between, the library is for everyone and we're excited to hit the road. Be sure to give us a wave when you see the vibrant purple and blue. Beep beep!
We're Hiring!
If you love books and working with people, and are a customer service pro, then we may have the job for you! We have four openings for public services specialists--three in Bend and one in Redmond. Click here for more information about each position and to fill out an online application. The four positions vary in hours, so be sure to check them all out.
Library Locations & Hours
You'll find us at six locations in Deschutes county; click here for locations and hours. Please note that all libraries are closed Jan. 1, and will close at 5:00 p.m. on Dec. 31, but all digital resources (eBooks, audio books, streaming music and movies, databases, etc.) will still be available from anywhere you happen to be with an internet connection.
