The Virginia Volunteerism and Service Conference (May 7-8, in Richmond) is thrilled to announce a dynamic lineup of speakers!

AmeriCorps NCCC Teams Deployed to Virginia

AmeriCorps NCCC teams are currently being deployed to four regions in Virginia from the AmeriCorps Southern Regional Campus in Vicksburg, MS. NCCC is a full-time, residential, team-based program for young adults, age 18-24. Teams, comprised of 8-10 members, complete multiple projects that address essential community needs.  
  • Abingdon - A team will help with the Critical Home Repair Program in Washington County by conducting exterior and interior painting, roof repair, installation of handicap accessible entrances, and structural repairs to homes. 
  • Lynchburg - A team will respond to flood damage in the area as part of the continued long term recovery of this community from recent flash floods.
  • Suffolk - The team will assist the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Northeast Region Fire Management by learning wildfire response and support wildfire operations.
  • Harrisonburg - The Forest Service will utilize the team to assist with wildland firefighting as well as chainsaw skills for the upcoming fire season as well as other disaster projects.

2018 Impact of National Service in Virginia

Last year more than 4,200 individuals of all ages and backgrounds met local needs, strengthened communities, and expanded economic opportunity through national service in Virginia, according to a new report from the Corporation for National and Community Service. AmeriCorps and Senior Corps members served at more than  400 locations across Virginia, including schools, food banks, homeless shelters, health clinics, youth centers, veterans facilities, and other nonprofit and faith-based organizations.  Last year, more than 600 AmeriCorps State & National, AmeriCorps VISTA, and AmeriCorps NCCC members met pressing local needs across Virginia, making a lasting impact in communities while gaining valuable skills and experience to advance their careers. Last year, more than 3,500 Virginia Senior Corps members met critical community needs while contributing to longer, healthier lives through Foster Grandparents,  Senior Companions, and  RSVP programs.

For 40+ years, National Volunteer Week has been about inspiring, recognizing and encouraging people to serve their communities. In addition to the thousands of volunteer projects and special events scheduled throughout the week, it is also the perfect time to promote your cause and recognize your volunteers. We'd love to help you share your volunteer stories this Volunteer Week.

Justin Hu of Vienna, age 16, and Shayla Young of Springfield, age 13, have been named Virginia's top youth volunteers for 2019 by the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards. Justin taught kung fu to children with disabilities and other challenges, and raised money to address medical and health-related needs in Africa and Asia, through "ABLE Kung Fu," the nonprofit organization he founded in 2016. Shayla conducted a workshop last year to help residents of a veterans retirement home learn how to make better use of their cell phones. Youth volunteers were also recognized from Buckingham, Fairfax, Richmond, McLean, and South Riding.

Susana Del Pozo!

Susana is currently serving as an Immigration Integration Specialist in her third year with the CASA Moving Forward AmeriCorps program. As an AmeriCorps member, she helps immigrant communities with their integration to their new life in the U.S. Susana, an immigrant herself, earned a Liberal Arts Associates Degree in Psychology from Dominion College. She is also a certified Professional and Life coach. Susana says her passion is and always has been social services and most of her positions have been in the behavioral health and/or social services fields. Find out how Susana is serving to help immigrants make their dreams of U.S. citizenship a reality later this month by following us on Facebook and Twitter 
Virginia College Adviser Wins National Award

Virginia College Advising Corps AmeriCorps member Abigail Osei was recently awarded the Peter and Laurie Grauer True North Award, an annual award given by the national College Advising Corps.  Abigail, a second-year member serving at TC Williams High School in Alexandria, was honored for serving as a college adviser who embodies "grace, humility, leadership, impact, and the ability to make the entire Corps better."  Congratulations Abigail!

The countdown is on for AmeriCorps Week 2019. This year's theme is #MadeInAmeriCorps, and the Corporation for National and Community Service is asking AmeriCorps members and alumni to tell the world how AmeriCorps changed them or the communities they served. Use the hashtag #MadeInAmeriCorps to share your story on social media from March 10-16. And help spread the word by sharing this message with your friends and followers on your social media networks.
