The Wild Side:
The Bald Eagle
Thanks to conservation efforts and data collected by citizen scientists that showed an increase in its population, the bald eagle, our national symbol, was able to be removed from the endangered species list in 2007. Bald eagles were considered to be rare in the 1960's when their populations had decreased to dangerously low numbers, due to the use of pesticides, such as DDT, as well as other hazards, like being shot and poisoned.
Now, you can see eagles quite often right here at Lake Crabtree! Just this past year, a new nest was discovered and our eagle couple has been spotted again this winter. Would you like to have an opportunity to catch a glimpse of these majestic creatures and help us collect data for our annual count of bald eagles? Join us on January 15th, from 7-9 a.m. for our Eagle Count event.
Preregistration is required. Visit our
website to register online.
