Regional Executive Committee Update
|

Hello Everyone!
Beginning January 1, 2019, Region 16's Pilot Governance will be implementing a few changes to the Regional Executive Committee (REC) positions, and we would like to share these with you.
On December 31, I will be vacating my position as
Regional Administrative Director on the current REC. With that in mind, we have spent a great deal of time in the selection of the candidate whom we felt would best facilitate this transition based on her many years of experience in Regional Governance, her Leadership qualities, and her familiarity with the Pilot program of Governance. With the recommendation of the existing members of this REC, our current Regional Membership Director, Cathy Stovold, has been appointed by the International Leadership Specialists and Regional Leadership Committee to fill my vacated position of
Regional Administrative Director.
Additionally, our current Region 16
Communications Coordinator, Sue Heighway, has been Internationally appointed to fill Cathy's previously held position of
Regional Membership Director.
These two appointments, along with current
Regional Education Director, Sue Melvin, will comprise your Regional Executive Committee effective January 1, 2019 -April 30, 2019. Assuming the vacated position of
Communications Coordinator will be Regionally appointed candidate Leila Brown, a current member of our Pilot Resource Staff.
The Regional Governance Pilot Program will be concluding its' two year trial in Region 16 on April 30th. The result of an International vote that is being held on January 11, 2019 will determine the Governance that will be in effect May 1, 2019. This Governance vote will include all 24 Sweet Adelines Regions, giving each an opportunity to decide if their individual regions would say "Yes" to remove the RMT form of Governance and thus retain the REC form of Governance. Whether RMT or REC, results of this vote will be announced on January 14, and the Governance of choice will go into effect May 1, 2019.
On a personal note, as I prepare to depart Region 16, I would like to say that it has been an honor and a privilege to be a member of this region for so many years, and to have served the Region in the governance capacities that I have.
I wish you an abundance of continued successes in this future....Region 16, and all of you, will always have a special place in my heart!

Attention unregistered quartets:
If you've been thinking of registering, do so before January 15th. After that, there will be an additional processing fee of $60 added to the $100 quartet registration fee.
This extra $60 US after January 15th applies to UNREGISTERED quartets. E.g. New quartets or those who did not RE-register in the summer. The cost to compete is completely separate and is $100. Do not confuse that with the registration fee of $100 to register your quartet name.

Here we are heading into the holiday season, having just soared through autumn.
It was a very busy time for Buffalo Gateway, a time which brought our opportunity to represent Lake Ontario Region 16 at the international competition in St. Louis.
You must know that we felt the support that came from the Region 16 membership, whether on-site or via the webcast and through cards, notes and love gifts.
What a thrill for each of us to represent you.
Our delight in earning a top 10 award for BGC while representing Region 16 cannot be measured on any spectrum.
And now the winter season and December is upon us with the introduction to the holidays at BGC's Annual Holiday Dinner Show. Once again, a Holiday Chorus comprised of family and friends joined us on the risers and they too were the recipients of the audience's delight at our holiday tunes, with smiles, laughs, toe tapping, hands clapping, sing-a-longs and Oooos and Ahhhhs and an occasional emotional tear.
And so now the time has come, Buffalo Gateway and Region 16 are on the precipice of a new journey. As ominous as "change" is oftentimes perceived to be, it can also reach the opposite end of the continuum and be an experience that is bright, uplifting and enriching. Change is not always easy, and we often times don't understand or like the need for it, but somewhere, sometime down the road, the vision will come to light and everyone will find and understand a value to this change.
Throughout the years of Buffalo Gateway's affiliation with Region 16's membership and choruses, 4-part harmony, acapella style, brought us together, but the varied relationships as friends, confidants, acquaintances, supporters, team members and coaches had been born, developed and embraced and have solidified our relationships together.
YOU, Region 16, surrounded Buffalo Gateway as unending pillars of support. Our hearts are overflowing with appreciation for the financial, emotional and encouraging support, whether at regional events, conventions and/or international competitions. We will remain forever grateful for the love that our Region 16 sisters have extended over the years.
It is our hope that as we venture on and continue to grow and develop, that you know that our hearts will remain supportive and encouraging to each Region 16 chorus.
Let us celebrate the memories of the many laughs, smiles and songs that we shared and may they continue to fill your hearts, as we will continue to cheer you on, for our hearts will be forever joined.
It has been said,
"Goodbyes are not forever and are not the end; it simply means I'll miss you until we meet again."

This was how Janet Cadman delivered the best news that Bytown Beat Chorus of Orleans could have received.
After serving as interim director for several months, and after a successful evaluation at competition in Syracuse,
Janet made her decision to fully commit to the chorus and to launch her career as a director.
To put it musically, we all knew then that "Happy Days are here again".
We were delighted to join the men of Capital City Chorus in June, to help with a fund raiser for Orleans United Church, the church where we rehearse every Monday night.
October was a busy month as we prepared for our Halloween Cafe, our main fund raiser for this year. Our guests were able to shop, enjoy afternoon tea and be entertained by the chorus, High Definition quartet, a male quartet, a local choir and a gifted flautist.
Most recently we had a happy afternoon singing for shoppers at Place d'Orleans Mall.
While there, we also fitted in a visit with Santa and sang for him and his helpers.
We have good news on the membership front too, having welcomed Maureen, Kelly, Karen, Darlene, Vanessa and Michele to the risers. Kelly Edwards has also taken on the role of assistant director.
Many of us attended Fall School and really enjoyed the coaching from Terese Antonini and Ryan Heller. If we can only put a little of what we learned to work for us, look out Syracuse 2019, here comes Bytown Beat!

What a busy Fall this has been for Canadian Showtime Chorus. We are learning new music and continuing to grow our chorus.
We held a successful fundraiser, Oktoberfest on October 27.
Our event organizer, Christine Ritchie, was also a member of the Oom-pah-pah band!
Great fun was had by all!
In November, many of our chorus members attended the Fall Music School. We were very proud to perform on the Saturday evening for all those in attendance. To celebrate Remembrance Day, we sang new versions of the Canadian and American National Anthems that were arranged specifically for us.
 That weekend, we were also very proud for two of our amazing members. Aileen Carney and Julie Sykes who received Region 16's Jackie Kraft Assistant Director Award. A well-deserved award and we are so proud to have them on our team!
As well, Julie Sykes, Stephanie Turpin and Erica Hills developed and led the Young Women in Harmony workshop and did an amazing job teaching the young women, not just one, but two songs. They received a standing ovation and touched many of us with their performance!
Our KeyRings quartet and Nothin' but Treble deserve kudos for being amazing participants in "Coaching Under Glass" on Sunday morning. Talk about being fearless!
Lastly, it was a pleasure to honour our Sweet Adeline of the Year, Mardi Redshaw.
Canadian Showtime has been preparing for many months for our second major fundraiser which took place on Sunday, December 2. We are thrilled to announce that this sold out event (well over 400 guests) was a huge success! Many thanks to Aliza Gauzas, Gala Coordinator, her team and all of our members for making this "An Affair to Remember"!
The Gala included our first Holiday Chorus, sixteen women (including some former members) who performed two songs with us. We are hoping that they caught the bug for a cappella singing and will join us in the New Year.

The holiday season for Image City Sound is always our busiest time of year and has started with two amazing events. Every year we perform at the Park Avenue Winter Festival in all kinds of weather. The air was cold but no precipitation fell, an answer to prayer. Horse drawn, jingle bell decked carriages filled with joyful riders came by and bigger than life-sized holiday characters roamed the streets and businesses to the delight of children of all ages. Our ICS singers and directors treated oncoming walkers to a variety of Christmas - Hanukkah songs for kids and adults. Dinner awaits inside afterword in a warm restaurant where we always get a request for a song or two.
On December 1, we held our first dinner show, "Holiday Cabaret" at Rick's Prime Rib House. Wonderful teams of chorus members created decorations for the hall and 25+ amazing gift baskets of every type to raffle off. Members and guests lined up to get tickets in hopes of winning a basket of their choice. 50/50 raffle tickets "flew off the shelf" with great anticipation. The chorus performance included two chorus quartets, "Velvet Blue" and "Chordalicious" and some fun emcee banter in between the songs. After intermission and dessert "Notably Yours", a SPEBSQSA male quartet entertained with beautiful Christmas songs. Then the drawings. A little curly-headed grandson of a chorus member picked the winning tickets and his sister ran at great speed up and down the aisle with each new bag of tickets to keep things moving. The chorus continued the program and "Notably Yours" joined us to close the show with "Christmas Chopsticks". What fun.
For the rest of December, we have several more holiday performances where the chorus or sometimes double quartets+ will be performing. Then, we'll top off the season performing our Christmas program for the residents of the St. John's Brickstone complex in the hall where we rehearse each Monday. Then we party. Merry Christmas all and to all a good night!

Barrie Soundwaves is
looking for a new director. We are a group of 30+ fun loving women who enjoy learning and performing. We are looking for strong leadership so that together we may realize our full potential. Interview and rehearsal schedules will be available at a later date.

We are thrilled to announce that North Metro's A Cappella Challenge for youth is underway once again. It is time to start planning your audition submission!
Last year's event was a huge success with groups from across Ontario participating in the inaugural event. With representation from a cappella groups with as few as four members to over 30 members, incredible talent crossed the stage in an evening of fun, high quality vocals, and comradery. The winning group, JAMME, hailed from Etobicoke School of the Arts.
The purpose of the A Cappella Challenge is to promote a cappella singing in our young people and give them a forum to share their talents with one another and with a grateful audience. As they perform alongside North Metro Chorus, some of these young people will hear the a cappella sounds of Barbershop for the first time. What a wonderful way to introduce young women and young men to this fulfilling hobby of ours.
If you are part of a youth choral group, work with a youth choral group, or know of a youth choral group who might be interested in the A Cappella Challenge, please share the link to our website with them (www.youthacappellachallenge.wordpress.com ). On-line auditions are due by November 30, 2018.
Please keep an eye on the website for ticket availability in December. We would love to have you join us in the audience on February 9, 2019 at the Richmond Hill Centre for the Performing Arts.
