March 2019 library news
Sick of the snow? Yep, it's been a lot to deal with this year. Our road crews and trail groomers are stressed-out and over-worked, so when you see them be sure to give them a smile and a thanks!

Can you see that tiny person who climbed up the snow pile across the street from the library? That's library board member Hedda Patzke, helping us make some lemonade out of all these frozen lemons. Stop by the library and take a guess on what date that pile will finally melt. The closest guessers will win some fantastic gift certificates from local businesses. We have contributions from Northern Fire Yoga and the AhHa Wellness spa so far, and will be seeking more donations and prizes. Stay tuned for details!

We have some activities and dates yet to be set for March, so you might be receiving a second newsletter from me this month. In the mean time, stay warm and keep reading!

Bullet Journaling class tomorrow

By request, we're repeating our "Bullet Journaling for beginners" class tomorrow, Tuesday, March 5th at 11:00 a.m. Learn about how this low-tech organization system is helping people get organized and get a handle on the many demands of modern life. All are welcome!
Grown-Up Story Hour

Why should kids have all the fun? Our first "Grown-Up Story Hour" at the Liberty Way Tap House on February 27th was a great event! Three of us had a chance to read a selection of short stories, poems, and essays to a small group of listeners and enjoy the cozy setting of the Liberty Way. Check out the reading list here.

We're planning another Grown-Up Story Hour sometime this month but haven't quite set the date yet. Stay tuned for more information!
South Africa with Dick & Wendy Thiede

Reuniting with a college roommate after 55 years provides the warp and woof for Dick & Wendy Thiede’s three-week immersion in the country of South Africa.

Join them for an “Armchair Travel” through South Africa on Tuesday, March 26th at 4:30 p.m . at the Mercer Public Library. Get more information on their presentation at our website.
Used Books wanted

We're now accepting donations of gently-used books and other media for our National Library Week book sale next month. Visit our website to learn more about the sale and what we are looking for.
Interested in Parliamentary Procedure?

Curious about the right way to run a meeting? Ever wondered what Robert's Rules of Order are for? Robert Workinger is a northwoods resident and a member of the National Association of Parliamentarians, and he has offered to teach a class on parliamentary procedure at the Mercer Library. If you are interested in this topic, please contact the library at 715-476-2366 or email director@mercerpubliclibrary.org and we'll keep you informed about the class when it's scheduled.
Fe University and other spring classes

Fe University is a program started by the Iron County Aging-Friendly Communities Coalition to give older adults the opportunity to keep their minds active and stay connected to the community. Check out their website for spring courses on climate change , poetry , the Flambeau Trail and Turtle Portage , the Lac du Flambeau community and history , and American Sign Language , all being held here in Mercer.

Fe University is a separate 501(c)(3) organization, and it's one example of the partnerships we try to maintain here at the library to bring more opportunities to our local residents. If you are interested in using the library's space for an educational class or workshop, please get in touch to see how we can help.
March Tech Classes

  • Tech Tuesday - March 5 and March 19 at 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. - Drop in for one-on-one technology help with basic problems and skill building. If those times aren't convenient for you, call the library to schedule a 30-60 minute appointment at another time.
Movies @ Your Library

Mercer School will have an early-release day on Friday, March 8th , and students of all ages are welcome to visit the library after school for popcorn and a movie. We'll be showing "Ralph Wrecks the Internet," 112 minutes, rated PG.

We had to cancel Movie Night last month due to the blizzard, so adults are invited to join us on Tuesday, March 19th at 6:30 p.m. for a rescheduled screening of "A Star is Born," 2018, starring Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper. The film is 136 minutes long and rated R.
