Southport Coastal Cleanup a Success!

A good time was had by all that came out in support of the Southport Coastal Cleanup last Saturday morning, 3/2/19! We focused the cleanup on three areas of the Southport waterfront (Kingsley Park, Ed Harper Waterfront Park, and the Southport Marsh Walk/Gazebo). Our team was happy to be involved, providing personnel, equipment, supplies, and pickup/disposal! Great effort from so many citizens (50+) that decided to spend their Saturday morning with us cleaning up our waterfront! Thanks to Lora Sharkey and the City of Southport, NC for getting this organized!! We are all better off for this volunteer effort. Here are just a few pictures we snapped to show you what you might have missed:

A "Must" stop for either ICW or offshore cruisers, 2018-04-20

Captain:  Mike Zimet, ORIENTAL
5-Stars

Southport Marina offers a first class experience. Great docks (although passing traffic can make it bit rolly during the day), experienced dock hands, a great welcome package, and clean and accessible showers and laundry, close access to provisioning and good eats, and perhaps the best reason to stop is the nightly weather and navigation brief given by retired USN Meteorologist Hank Pomeranz. I have attended 4 briefings over the past several cruising seasons and these briefs and the user friendly handout are simply indispensable. Kudos to Southport and Zimmerman for their sponsorship. Even for those vessels not cruising the ICW, the offshore aspects of the weather and navigation briefs are helpful for route planning and crew peace of mind. Southport is a great stop and made mandatory due to the ICW migration season briefings (Spring and Fall migration seasons).

  Great Marina, 2018-03-27
Captain:  Joe Yeye, Rock Hall, MD
5-Stars

I am a bit reluctant to give them five stars because they might become so popular that I might have a problem reserving a slip in the future. It's a great marina and a lovely town.

The ONLY negative about this marina is that at times it can be exposed to wind-generated wave action. Otherwise, the entire staff is very professional and willing to accommodate. Facilities such as the showers, laundry room, ship store, fuel dock, picnic and gathering areas are extremely well looked after. The downtown area is a convenient walk to the North Carolina Maritime Museum, cafes, stores, and numerous restaurants. A great location to have friends or family come to spend some time with you while you're cruising.

Yes this place costs more (but not outrageous). But the location can't be beat if you want to see Southport, or just eat out.

If you arrive when the dock crew is there, you are in luck as the guys are the best and very skilled. They try to leave the south facing open till the last as it is easiest to get into unassisted if the dock crew have gone home. This spot can be a little rocky as it is open to the ICW and the south breeze, so use use a few extra bumpers for a peaceful night.

The laundry was clean and working. Wifi at the end of the dock was weak, but OK up by the laundry (if you want to stream a movie while the cloths cycle through the wash.)

Wifi strength was only complaint.

Not only is this marina well appointed and close to town, the staff is amazingly helpful. Not to be missed is a FREE seminar each night on what to expect in navigating the Cape Fear River and the ICW up to Norfolk. Hank gives full weather forecasts and areas to beware of for your trip. These seminars are every night for two weeks in the spring and again in the fall.

Thank you for all the positive feedback from our slip holders and transient customers we have been receiving on Active Captain, Waterway Guide, and Salty Southeast Cruisers' Net...please continue to let us know how we are doing!

There are 10,000 three-leaf clovers for every four-leaf clover.
The odds of finding a four-leaf clover are not exaggerated. Next time you find one (if you find one), spray it with hair-spray, stick it in a laminated folder, and frame it on your wall with the caption "I win at life" beneath it, because you may never find another one...ever again.

Sparkling Shamrock Cocktail

Sure, this cocktail was originally designed as a  St. Patrick's Day drink, but it also makes an ideal and refreshing sipper all  spring and summer long. It focuses on a combination of fruit, including fresh cucumber and lemon with pear vodka, and the herbs elder flower and mint.
You will notice the recipe giving the choice of either club soda or lemonade is given and both are great options, but it adds a special something to the drink when made with equal parts of each. This cocktail recipe was provided by Grey Goose.
  • Ingredients

    1. In a cocktail shaker, mix all
    2. Shake vigorously and double strain.
    3. Serve in a highball glass with cubed ice and garnish with mint, cucumber slices, and lemon zest.
    4. Top with lemonade or club soda
