Australian olive imports down
Australian olive oil imports (including olive pomace oils) decreased substantially in the last quarter of 2017 compared with the same period in 2016, falling from 8338 tonnes to 6899 tonnes. Imports of table olives in the first four months of the 2017/18 crop year (September-December 2017) also reduced by 13% from the previous year.

It’s not you, it’s climate change
‘Business as usual is no longer an option’ is the key message from from not-for-profit advocacy organisation Farmers for Climate Action, with a new crowd-funded television campaign set to launch across regional screens from 24th March.
“Momentum for climate action is growing rapidly across rural Australia and we’re calling on farmers to look up, speak up and our politicians to keep up,” the organisers said.
“As farmers, we can’t allow our country to continue on a trajectory of rising emissions and climate inaction. Our future is in our hands.”
AIOA Gold Medal oils to feature in Barcelona
Gold medal winning Australian EVOOs will be showcased among the world’s best at an international olive oil seminar being held this month in Spain. US-based Australian International Olive Awards judge Alexandra Devarenne is featuring several of the 2017 competition’s top Australian oils during a tasting she is running as part of the IRTA Olive Oil Evaluation Course, being held in Barcelona from 19-23 March. If you can swing a last-minute trip, it looks like a great learning experience – more information here.

With the 43rd FoodEx Japan show underway in Tokyo this week, we uncover what some of the nation’s product buyers are on the lookout for when it comes to selecting new imports.

Provenance and traceability, shelf-life, luxury goods … plenty of interest to EVOO producers here.
Researchers speculate that early olive growers had grafted native centennial trees with others imported from Greece and Lebanon to selectively breed for desirable traits.
As the bottle moves through the supply chain it can be tracked. When it changes hands from wholesaler to retailer to consumer, each step is noted with another transaction on the blockchain.

In the last few days, several European countries were struck by an extraordinary wave of cold which lowered temperatures below freezing.
You've likely heard the news: More than 69% of the extra-virgin olive oil available at the supermarket is not, in fact, extra virgin. In fact, much of it isn't olive oil at all: Many companies use soybean or sunflower oil as cheaper alternatives to olive oil, so they can turn a greater profit.

Pretty good, user-friendly consumer info.
